a bunch of years ago i walked into a music store to buy a new primary axe, after playing no less tn 50 guitars with a h-s-s set up or a s-s-s setup I was faced with an eric clapton model start and an Ibanez I had never seen before,
after two more hours of deliberation (and a very very patient sales person) I walked out of the store with an "banez 440sII" in a not quite blue not quite purple finish, she was subsequently named Cathy and has been descibed as "what guitars shoudl sound like in heaven" and mistaken for everything from an es335 to a custom strat.
she is ALSO the only one I have ever seen I'm told that the lead player for tull used one on "crest of a knave" but I have never seen another...
for those of you who may not be familiar
the 440sII has an h-s-s pickup configuration a wilkonson type trem a sabre body in mahogany and locking keys
the neck is almost as thin as the newer wizard necks but the frets are medium jumbo and there is no tilt to the headstock
one sales person who I asked while desperately trying to find another as a back up said " yeah i think they made those for about 2 hrs on a fri "
does anyone else have one does anyone of note play them
why for great gods sake did they stop making them
at this point I am working on duplicating it myself but I would love to communicate with someone else who owns this rarest of unlikely blues guitars |
