Is there anyone out there who knows about the trem on the Destroyer II models? I believe these are known as a "Roadstar" trem. They are not routed out, they sit on top of the body. I am wondering if anyone has tried to put a different trem on one of these guitars. Someone has put the wrong pieces on mine, (mainly screws) and also at one time made her into a hardtail. (There is a one piece bridge with fine tuners in the case.) Any ideas? Does a Floyd fit?
Thanks,
Bobby E.

Any trem system requires some amount of routing but since you mentioned that yours "sits on top of the body" I suspect that it may be a Kahler type of system. Kahler systems indeed did not require "through the body" routing like Fender and Floyd Rose systems but they still require a small amount to be routed out for their spring system. Since you also mention fine tuners, I'd again be inclined to suspect a Kahler, or Kahler copy type of system.

I am unaware of any stock Ibanez trem system being called a "Roadstar" trem. Depending upon the model, Roadstars have used Fender copy style trems, "Hard Rocker", "Hard Rocker Pro", "Pro- Rock'R" and finally various Floyd Rose licenced "Edge" trems.

Phil Collen from Def Leppard once remarked that he and Ibanez designed a Destroyer II together and that his personal guitars had Kahler trems. I don't know if Ibanez ever publicly offered the Phil Collen Destroyers with Kahlers but they sure made plenty of them with the non-locking Fender type and the Pro-Rock'R trems.

What I would do is first confirm exactly what type of system your guitar has. If it is a Kahler and your guitar is black with cream binding and has three humbucking pickups, you may have a Phil Collen model that is rare indeed. Other than Phil's personal guitiars, I've never seen for sale a Phil Collen model with a genuine, Ibanez installed Kahler.
After getting more info on just exactly what your guitar is you will have to decide on how extensively you want to irrevocably modify it, if at all.
Hope this helps, Timo.

The DT-555BK (Phil Collen) Model from 1982 through early 84 used the Hard rock'r Tremolo, without a locking nut. The pro Rock'r was not installed on Destroyer's until the second or third month in 1984.

Also if you look at Phil Collens Destroyers, you will see that the headstock has no binding like the production models. Phil actually used the Triple pickup black Destroyer long before his Def Leppard days. I have the videos of him when he was in the band "Girl" with Phil Lewis of L.A. Guns playing this guitar.
