I'm a new user with some questions.

I have an 83 Destroyer (DT 300? set neck, cherry sunburst) with a Super 58 in the neck but it doesn't have the original V2 in the bridge position. Would a Dimarzio or Duncan Distortion come close to the sound of the V2? Anyone have a V2 they want to get rid of?

Also, I want to replace the humbuckers on my Lado Canadian Devil with pickups that sound like the V2 and 58. I was considering the Dimazrio PAF and PAF Pro or the Duncan 59.

Any info is appreciated!!! Thanks!

Arthur,

I've not found an aftermarket pickup with the same qualities as a V2. There is a certain smooth snarl to the V2's which I have come to love! (IMHO) Stay away from the later model "IBZUSAV2". It does not have the same sound as the earlier ones. I have several V2's (in cream or black) if you'd like to buy one or two.

The believe the Super58's were/are virtual clones of a Gibson PAF. I don't have first hand knowledge, but I'm sure the Duncan 59 or Seth Lover model would perform nicely.

Cheers
Steve

Thanks for the info!

I called Torres Engineering in San Mateo, Ca http://www.torresengineering.com and they told me the following:

The Duncan models I mentioned are virtually identical to the DiMarzio models. The Duncan Distortion is a copy of the DiMarzio Distortion. The DiMarzio PAF Pro has more midrange than the Dimaraio PAF and will probably come closest to the Super 58.

Arthur,

You could use a Dimarzio Super Distortion. That was the aftermarket pickup which inspired the V2 pickup. It should be very similar.

As for Super 58's, you can simply order them new from your local Ibanez dealer.

Mark

Mark,

I had the opportunity to do an A/B test with a DiMarzio Super and an Ibanez V2. The guitar was an '89 RG570. The Super was to be replaced with a DiMarzio X2N (gainhead metal player). As it turned out, the X2N was dead out of the box. So I offered to put in a V2 'til he could replace the defective X2N. "Sure" was the response. He liked the V2 better than the Super, but could not articulate as to why. Anyway, the Super and the V2 are very close. However, to my ear, the V2 has a more musical midrange. Makes for a warmer clean and a smoother overdrive. Just my opinion of course...

Cheers
Steve

Steve,

That's interesting. I'm not surprised that the V2 is a little more musical. Ibanez were always after tone, even with their rock inspired products.

i think it's wierd that V2's were used in their jazz guitars (like my AS80), but I gues they were thinking about a crossover instrument that could do jazz and hard rock.

Cheers,

Mark

Mark,

Or maybe because the V2 is more resistant to feedback? I know the Super58's in my Artist would squeal like pigs if I leaned on the gain too hard.

What is your opinion on the V2-in-a-hollow-body tone? Or semi-hollow as the case may be.

Steve,

I am very happy with the sound of the V2's in my AS80. It has more midrange than the AS100 with Super 58's that I have. It really nails a great liquid jazz tone, and when you add a little gain - WATCH OUT!!! It really bites.

Regards,

Mark
