Opinion on Refinishing ??

Author Message   Brooks Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    Ok, give me some opinions on what you think about refinishing older (80's) guitars. Like the Destroyer. I have had people tell me that its not worth anything if you get it refinished, then people have told me the value goes up. I have a Destroyer that needs a little "love and care". Personally, if I purchase a guitar with no intention of ever selling it, I'm more open as to what I will let myself do to it. After all it's my property no mater what anyone says it't worth(or not). If I were to refinish something I would certainly pay for a top quality job. But again, this would be to please myself, not anyone else whom might claim the the value has been ruined by changing something(anything!) from stock. So to me the questions are:What is it worth to me and will I ever sell this guitar again? If I intend to sell something again, I'm inclined to keep things the way they are, even if this might mean that the guitar looks shabby. The theory being that it's easy to find crummy examples of botched refinishes, badly routed Floyd retrofits, "original except for..." guitars. It's hard to find truly unmolested examples of some models so therefore originality generates more value and desireabilty for collectors even though there might be many miles on the "odometer". Lets talk some more because I'm crazy about Destroyer II's and I have 5 of em! I'd agree with Timo about figuring out what you expect to do with the guitar, in the future. Are you going to sell it? If so, do you want top dollar for it? If you answer yes to both questions AND the guitar is already somewhat collectible...leave it as is. Get your/investment out of it and keep trading up. Brooks   Brooks Posted on Friday, October 08, 2004 - 11:04 am:    Actually, I have a bud that has (2) of the set neck Collen Destroyers, and he is getting a Marilyn Monroe graphic on 1, and the Def Leppard Pyromania graphic on the other. GMW Guitarworks (gmwguitars.com) are doing them both. I cant wait to see the Destroyers refinished. Brooks
