Ibanez RX70

The RX (GRX) series guitars are entry level items. While they're not bad, or unplayable, for a few dollars more you can get a much better guitar. I had an RX20 a few years back. It was replaced by a GAX70. Still an economy guitar, but a MUCH better player. As for the Ibanez amps, I don't have any first hand knowledge. If you can, play through one to see if you like it. The combo pack appeals to me cause I don't know that much about guitars/amps. However I first picked up a guitar 4 years ago so I want something decent for a low price. I'll see what my guitar shop have on offer. It sounds like you are a newcomer to purchasing equipment, and are leaning heavily on some marketing guy at Ibanez (or other manufacturer or even a music store) to tell you what you "need". Hey I can tell you that you "need" a guitar, amp and cord. Am I a marketing guru, or what? The reality is that there is a huge market for "starter kits". Many persons become infatuated with learning an instrument, but drop it after a short period of time (because it takes work). So, most people don't want to make a sizable investment for fear that it will be wasted. Marketing guys know this. The starter kits put together and promoted by manufacturers are not assembled for their value over the long haul, but to meet the price point needed to get "the masses" to buy something quickly, even impulsively. Marketing guys know that the lower the cost, the more sales. They also know that to lower the cost they have to lower the quality of the equipment. By necessity, starter kits equal lower quality items. The dilemna for the serious guitarist is you will get better and will grow out of this rig, but the rig will have a very low resale value to help finance the next step up. Why? It's lower quality equipment that is readily available (everybody is dumping it because they don't play anymore or are moving up). The challenge for you is to identify how serious you are about guitar. The more serious, the more time you'll invest in educating yourself before you purchase. Marketing guys thrive on selling any stuff to uneducated persons. Don't trust them. Listen to friends who have some experience. If your circle of guitar friends is limited, then asking for advice here is the next best thing (maybe even better ). But there's no substitute for getting out their and playing as many guitars as possible. You'll find things out faster and will start you building "experience" in yourself. If I haven't worn you out yet, can I ask a few questions? 1. Have you been playing for 4 years or just tinkering? 2. Have you taken lessons? 3. What make/model of guitar and amp do you currently have? 3a. Is there anything wrong with it? 4. What kind of music do you like to play? 4a. What kind would you like to play? 5. Do you see yourself playing guitar in 5 years? 6. How much time do you have/plan to invest in playing/learning guitar? 7. How much money do you have to invest (if you had to go aout and buy tomorrow)? 8. Do you care whether the equipment is new or used? If you've been playing for 4 years and have decided to "move up" then I'd say that you are past the "starter" phase. These questions are designed to help define your needs/goals. This way the advice others give regarding a new purchase, will be a "custom fit" rather than the "one size fits all" that a marketing guy will put together. I think I can sum up the shopping procedure for you. Buy the guitar that SOUNDS and FEELS the best within your price range. Don't buy sight unseen unless you absolutely have to. Don't let the name on the headstock be an issue. SOUND and FEEL are the critical points. Buy the best SOUNDing amp (to your ears) within your price range. Extra features are neat, but if the amp's overall SOUND is not to your liking, you'll be unhappy. Again, don't be swayed by brand names. And #8 above should be taken very seriously. Guitars and amps generally lose a lot of value as soon as they're purchased. Used gear can be a great bargain.
