I recently aquired a '91 540R with an F1/C1/C1 configuration. This is a pretty nice combo for getting a variety of hum-free tones. All in all, a really nice solid guitar - more substantial, and comfy than a sabre, I think. It's nice to have a whammy again, but I'm still not sure if I can stand the 'flutter' of the Lo Pro Edge trem - that could be fixed with a Tremsetter.

My question is on the F1 bridge pickup. It is described as responsive and versitile, with a warm classic tone and output. To my ears, it still sounds a little metalic, and high on the harmonic overtones. This could be because the guitars I'm comparing it to are very warm sounding.

Is the F1 comparable to a PAF style, or Super 58, or is it hotter? Any thoughts before I begin expimamenting with aftermarket pickups?

hey funkle,

i think ibanez stock pickups for this type of guitar are aimed more towards hardrock guitarists. they're probably "warm" when compared to an EMG '81 or a Dimarzio evolution or something, but if you want that real warm, vintage tone, you'd have to go with a PAF, or maybe a Seymour duncan seth lover or '59. i think this would put the F1 pickup in the "medium output " categorie, but i'm no expert...
