I've got an old RG550 (matching body/headstock color) that I'm in the process of modifying. I've stripped the finish and and found a surprise. I was under the impression that basswood is a soft, light-weight wood. The guitar is heavier that what I expected basswood to be and what I've found under the finish is anything but soft. The wood has the dark mineral streaks typical to basswood but it's like rock when is comes to sanding.

Was I just mistaken about basswood or did early RGs use denser wood than newer ones?

do'nt confuse mineral streaks with grain, you could have an ash body. ash bodies have streaks of grain which are very open pored. i recently purchased a 550 body, used, made of ash (much to my surprise). The neck pocket was hand stamped rg550 in red ink, original color was pink. i can only assume that it was a japanese market body
