I managed to snag myself an '85 DT555 (woohoo!) off eBay a few days ago, and have a quick question to ask here while I wait for this baby to arrive :

How exactly are the knobs and toggle switch assigned? You know - what PUs are active in which toggle position, and what exactly do the three knobs do? Seeing as there are 3 PUs, I assume 2 are volume and 1 is tone, but never having owned anything other than standard Les Paul type setups (2T, 2V), I'm a bit mystified by how this will work.

Any comments?

Heres the wiring to use all three pickups, although many came without the center pickup wired.

Wow - thanks! Hopefully mine is wired properly/as above...

Now, to see if I understand this (not exactly great at schematics) : one volume acts as a master volume, one as tone, and 3rd as volume dedicated to center pickup exclusively (which I assume gets filtered through master volume). Correct?

Can't really tell on the toggle though - is the middle/center PU always active (which is what it looks like to me)? If so, does middle toggle position mean only center PU or all 3 PUs?

That's way my guitar tech wired my DT-555, center position on the toggle has all three pickups active. I like to experiment, I replaced the V2's in my 555 with a EMG "81" in the neck, and two "85"s in the center & bridge position. Killer sound. Pictured are three of my four Destoyers' from left to right :

DT-450BK (1984) : Dimarzio PAF (Neck) Super Distortion (Bridge)

DT-450WH (1985) : V2 (Neck & Bridge, taken from my 555)

DT-555BK (1985) : EMG "81" (Neck) EMG "85" (Center & Bridge)

DT-300FR (1981) : EMG "81" (Neck) EMG "85" (Bridge) (Not pictured as I have it a part right now waiting for the bridge & tail piece to get back from the re-platers)

Nice collection. I've a Washburn A-10, and now a DT-555, both stock as far as I can tell. Did all early 84/85 DT-555s come with V2 pickups? Weren't they actually made by DiMarzio but labeled as Ibanez? Trying to larn as much as possible about this guitar...

The DT-555 came stock with V2 pickups, made by Ibanez. The bolt on counter part DT-155 came with Super 70's. The DT-555 came in two different versions. The 1982 through early 84 came with the Hard Rock'r tremolo, without the locking nut and also had the knobs placed higher in the body like all the early Destroyer II models. In Febuary / March of 1984 the DT-555 had the Pro Rock'r installed with the locking nut & the knobs were relocated lower in the body. Why the 555 kept this configuration I can't tell you. The DT-500 & DT-550 came out in 1983 with the relocated knobs...

Yes it has the Pro Rock'r & looks to be in original condition. The knobs are original & the pickups look original as well, as they still have the three screw design. A word of advice, find a cheap Roadstar with the gold Pro Rock'r so you have spare saddles & tuners...
