I've got an old (ca. 1984) Ibanez Double Sound Fuzz/Wah (with the On-LED). Although it does not need a lot of electrical power (the battery lasts rather long) I would like to use it with an external power supply unit. The problem is that it does not have an input socket. Since I do not want to drill a hole into it, I thought, well, let's just solder a battery clip onto a little 9V transformer (formerly used to charge a mobile phone),leave the battery compartment open and connect it to the battery clip.´Unfortunately this does not work. I get an awful hum, impossible to play. Is the problem part of the power supply unit or my Wah-pedal? Anyone out there who can provide some useful advice?

The power supply can definately cause a hum. One used for charging a battery doesn't have to put out as clean of voltage as one for audio equipment. If the effect works with the battery but doesn't with the power supply I'd say that's it. I remember years ago seeing a unit for sale that did what you're trying. I can't remember who made it.

Using an unregulated power supply will cause hum with some effects. I found this out when I bough a PUE5, it made a huge hum with my old power supply. I went and bought a new regulated one and there was not a hint of hum.
My suggestion would be a Godlyke power supply which comes with a daisy chain and a few adaptors including one for effects that only take 9 volt batteries. One end of the adaptor fits onto the end of the power supply cable (or daisy chain) and the other clips onto the battery terminal on your effect. No need to rewire anything. It's also regulated so there won't be hum and it put's out 1.7amps which is more than enough to run a dozen pedals with headroom. I bought my Godlyke from here ...http://www.guitareffectspedals.com/power-all.html
