There were two color schemes (all black vs. black & tan(?). If I recall correctly, I once opened up a UE400 and found maybe 12 of the JRC4558D chips! It's a good idea to ask as not units necessarily have the same chips. It's also important to make sure you get the footswitch and connecting cable. Sometimes they're not included and they're not easy to find. mk Roadartstar Username: Roadartstar Registered: 08-2004 Posted on Wednesday, February 07, 2007 - 11:43 pm:    yes i agree with micheal 100% (you are very knowledgable on old ibanez effects MK) i have both ue400 and the 405 both the old school 808 style switches these are really cool, it is useless without the pedal and special cable connector also there is a way to change the order of effects which is very cool i have both in a single rack i love them very underrated and nice vintage effects you should look into them bob they would compliment your axes very nicely and you will have hours of fun turning knobs and getting whacked out sounds for the prices they go for they are a very good value considering the prices some people pay for single vintage analog or clones effects pedals these days! You can also have any combination of effects on simultaneously. I think that the AD-202, which is also a multi-effects and includes a great delay, is poorly designed: only one effect at a time. Who would want a rackmount effects unit with 5(?) effects where only one could be used at a time?? Two more points: - the early UE400 says 'distortion' while the later version says 'overdrive'. I think that's correct... - in terms of condition, these units vary widely. They're vintage: some are in great condition and some suck. Worse off, you may find a unit where some of the individual effects are good and some are noisy or have issues. Afterall, you're getting 4 different effects slapped together in one box with the insta-patch thrown in to sweeten the pot. Personally, I bought several of each of the 400's & 405's before I found one that I really liked. My motto with anything is: keep the best and sell the rest... The first version has the TS808-style switches and the 'Distortion' unit: Although that version is equipped with 11 JRC4558D chips, NONE of them is used in the 'Distortion' section! Actually there were two TA7136P used, the same chips that can be found in a BOSS DS-1, if I remember correctly... 2. The second version still has the TS808-style switches but features a 'Overdrive' unit and an additional Output for the Stereo Chorus: In this version Panasonic 6552 chips were used for all units incl. the Overdrive. The chip types are printed on the PCB as well which indicates that those chips were used by design and weren't just replacements for possibly out-of-stock JRC4558D. 3. The third version has the TS9-style switches and the different color of the cover and the pedal board. Unfortunately I hadn't have the chance to check out this version yet. Since it was produced in the same period of time as the UE300, which allegedly uses the Tube Screamer circuit, it possibly has a TS9 inside as well... So whenever you read in a review or item description that the old UE400 has the "original TS808 circuit inside", don't believe the hype.
