I am a Heavy Metal guitarist. And because of that, distortion is for my playing like blood for my life. I use the distortion to make my riffs realy heavy and agressive, and my solos to cut through our "two bass-drum" drummer, but keeping its brilliancy & classic tone.
During my years of playing i've tried a lot of distortion pedals, and, by this moment, many of my friends use the BOSS "Metal Zone" MT-2, but I see that distortion a little "impersonal" and, maybe too dry. It sounds rare, I know, but the distortion I always use is the distortion of my Marshall amplificator!!! I think it's the best i've ever heard. Agressive & brilliant. Contundent & metal-sounding.
I would like to hear what do you think about my preferences, & i would thank you if you can tell me about any distortion you think I should test. |

at the end of the day, pedals just can't beat that ol' amp overdrive.
reading that u r the agressive type, make it a point to try:
*mesa boogie
*soldano- preferably the decatone/ SLO 100 heads
*VHT- pitbull
recently, i stumbled upon a rather lethal combination of pedals: tube screamer + boss dual overdrive (lead channel). things don't have to wear a 'metal' tag to be brutal.

Just go with a (now discontinued) Marshall Guv'Nor, old model.
Gives a "classic" distortion, like Pistol's Steve Jones, Slash, Santana, etc.. but retains the guitar's tone and character.
So it's very dynamic, powerful, unlike the MT2 which is fake-sounding ans shrill. |

I've been using the Ibanez Soundtank CM5 Classic Metal pedal for my "big" distortion sound. It can be found for less that $30. It has much more character than the Boss Mental Zone.
I've given up on the Boss & Danelectro pedals & use Ibanez effects exclusively. |
