I have an Ibanez(?) ES-175 copy from around 71-73. No headstock logo, no serial, no label. "Open book" head stock form, the gibson head stock inlay etc.

However i'm not sure if this is the correct thread to drop questions and images about/of the instrument? Else I kindly ask the admin to delete this new thread.

Hey, that's the right place.
There are some "experts" here that'll surely help and if you want to be 100% sure just post a pic.

OK - thanks Tristan

Here we go...

I bought this es-175 copy on ebay for about 1 1/2 months ago. Advertised as "probably ibanez lawsuit"
The guitar arrived extremely well packed and in top-condition!

It's really nice to play, has a low action and really the sound i like for (especially) plucked accompainments.

The instrument has been into service at my luthier with the following issues:

- String, neck, bridge set-up
- Wooden bridge replaced aith a gotoh tune-o-matic
- also the piece of wood under the bridge was replaced
- New pots, knobs, switch, jack & cables
- Frets (don't now the expression in EN) grained(?)
- Schaller security locks

He also looked at the backside of the pickups, and found no special information. Also the inside of the body was inspected with a mirror: nothing found.

If anyone of you all experts can tell me more about the instrument it would be really cool!

Thank you in advance / Jörgen

the neck PUP...

at the very beginning i did have some thoughts on changing to a super58... probably just because i'm used to another sound? finally i came to the conclusion, to leave the instrument as it is.
it really sounds different than the as-200 that i usually play, and finally - and more important - i want to learn more from playing an instrument with a different character compared to what i'm used to. it starts already at my finger tips and mind, and seems to end up at the amp.

i play a fender blues junior, and have still not the really found an ideal setting for this type of guitar.

BTW
i did checked up the possibilities of ordering a MIJ super58, but ibanez swizerland told it will take up to 3 months before i could have one. besides all that sounds a bit slow to me... can't really remember the price, but was rather expensive.

further, the replacement of the pots, capacitors , cables and the rest that was done is in my opinion really a huge improvement of the sound and physical feeling of playing the guitar.

I had the electronic set up with the lower volume and tone as "dummies" and only use the upper ones as master tone and master volume. Very handy :-)

Joergen,

Very nice looking guitar. It appears you really scored a nice axe. Contratulations and thank you for sharing the photos. Sorry - I do not know much about the "lawsuit" era guitars. Just wanted to comment on how much I like your guitar.

I am using my 2630 as my main axe for playing out now, but i will have to keep playing the 2355 changing amps , settings etc, my rig now is a peavey classic 30 with 1x12 extention cab, and i have a fender acoustasonic sfx which i havnt used and a fender deluxe reverb that needs re tubes etc, that sounds like a cool idea with the dummies, later, j

There are several indications that this is NOT an Ibanez:
- there is no logo on the headstock at all;
- there is no label inside;
- it has no ZERO-fret, which makes it younger than 1968 if it were an Ibanez;
- the tops of the pole pieces are too round to be old Maxons;
- the pickups have no logo, so if it were an Ibanez, it would be younger than 1974;
- the binding is a simple one without abalone or other fancy stuff, and the headstock is not of the castle type, so it's no Artist;
- the tailpiece is a normal ES-175 not an L-4CES, so it's no 2455, leaving us with the possibility of an 2355;
- all hardware seems to be worn gold, and the tuners seem to be original but not typical for the Ibanez 2355 so it's no 2355;

I'd say this is no Ibanez at all.

Looking at the potmeter knobs, I guess it's a '70s Japanese ES-175 copy. The tuners remind me of the ones on my Suzuki ES-335 copy, which has no label but the Suzuki brand MOP inlaid in the headstock.

But there are all kinds of possibilities for a NO LABEL Japanese ES-175 copy. What matters is, if it plays and sounds right!

Ginger

Thank you very much for that detailed comment!

The guitar really sounds good, and i'm happy with it also if it's not an ibanez!!

Who knows, it might come from the same factory. Nevertheless I find Japanese guitars from the 70's-80's to be superb and not only the ones that came from the Fujigen factory. There are many good ones, especially if we talk about copies.
You know, if you're satisfied with it you should keep to it. It's definitely Japanese.
Maybe my eyes are misleading me, but I can see on the pictures that the sharp cutaway is a bit shorter/lower than on 2355s..
Here's an example from my Maya copy (which I'm selling tonight)
btw, I might be just wrong on that.

At least we know now for sure, that your machine heads are original AND from Gotoh:

I think you won't have a problem with that. It's original Japanese hardware and stable.

Personally I would not have changed the potmeter knobs, but you still have them. Get your original bridge back and keep all the original parts in a small click bag in your case. BTW these models fit in every dreadnought case with an arched lid.
Much easier to find than the L-5 or Super 400 size.

Both of them are nice guitars, guys. You know Naturals and Sunbursts are my favourites.

Tris, you're going fast, man! I'd have more difficulties parting from such beautiful pieces.

Gemberbier,

Sorry for the late reply here, but it's not a problem when it comes with profit at the side.
I bought them as a try and error anyways.
The late 60's early 70's Ibanez ES-175 copy was bought for 230 euro and sold for 530 euro on ebay.
The Maya ES-175 copy was bought for 200 euro and sold on ebay for 705 euro.
With such profits on the side and having my L-5 copy for such a good price, I can afford myself also another semi hollow.

Tris, I think you are an excellent salesman. You know how to present an instrument.
What is crucial: good photography and a true story, no bull....
Most guitars you bought for a low price, sold badly because of bad presentation. Hats off, Tris!

BTW, I'm wearing glasses since my 35th (my work is bad for my eyes). What digital camera would you recommend? (I hate that HP that's laying around here).

Ebay Item #200089872942
The description is a bit dumbed down, of course.
Practically based on my sincere belief that it was manufactured at the Fujigen factory, even if it wasn't (there aren't so many alternatives) it has a very high quality.
I have a few cams laying around but my favorite is easily the Canon PowerShot SD630, in europe it's called the IXUS 65.
My friend has the IXUS 60, or the PowerShot SD600 which is basically the same camera with a smaller viewing screen (the 65 has a screen as big as the camera itself) and I think from the price point (of the IXUS 60, 215 EUR on amazon.de) it's the best value for the money a digicam can get.
I get clear images with every photo. It's #1 seller both on amazon.com and amazon.de for a reason. It's a great product.
I had good experience with Sony Cybershot, if you'd ask me I would leave others aside for a while, that Canon will give you some great value for the money.. BUT..

If you can find a well preserved copy of one of the higher speced cameras from the Fujigen factory, go for it..

Ah, and thanks for the compliments. BTW, I'd love to see some pics from your collection, especially your PE-180.

Well, I've been think about a Fuji camera, which as a Lithium-ion battery (rechargeable). There is a picture of my friend's PE-180 here somewhere. Mine is identical but it has an abalone inlay in the back of the headstock and it has an L-1000 label inside.
So officially it's not a PE-180. The only visible difference between our two guitars on the front is that mine has a small (2 cm) golden griffon holding a globe glued on the top on the lower bout. I don't know what's underneath it, and to be honest, I don't want to know. Now it says: "This guitar is mine!" and that's what it is.

Anyway, it looks just like this, but this one's Jazzerman's:

dicks Aria PE-180

An L-1000 is a first year PE-180 so it's quite rare.
I played a PE-190 Robert Conti, eventually couldn't buy it, it was a great instrument though.
I like the Super 400 inlays on the PE-180 though.
My Hondo L-5 has interesting inlays, it's a mixture of abalone/mop block inlays.
Anyways, be aware that almost any mid priced digicam today comes with a Li-Ion battery.
