I live in Singapore. A local jazz guitarist friend of mine who plays 6 nights a week swears by his GB20. When it was stolen, he took weeks searching the whole USA for an identical replacement. Has any of the Ibanez enthusiasts here played a GB20? How does it compare with other archtops, and other Ibanez archtops like the JP20? How much does it cost to get one?

I have owned and played the Ibanez GB20.
To me the GB20 is great for playing Jazz. If you manage to find a GB20 I'm certain you won't be disappointed in any way.

Well I believe the GB20 has a bigger and warmer tone than the Ibanez JP20.
The Ibanez JP20 was a copy of the guitar Jimmy D'Aquisto had made for Joe Pass. Joe had the pickup on his D'Aquisto placed a little further back from the fingerboard than most Gibsons, Guilds, and other Post WWII archtop guitars.
I find the position of the pickup on the JP20 to be the guitar least desirable quality. In its present position the pickup is unable to channel the warmer tones. If Ibanez had placed the pickup on the JP20 no greater than 3/4 inches from the fingerboard the JP20 would be one of Ibanez's best selling guitars. Who knows, Ibanez might not have discontinued JP20 production.
I have played a JP20 that had some wiring modifications done to it which resulted in a noticeably warmer output from the guitar.

I believe Pat Metheny has a blond JP20 with the pickup positioned closer to the fingerboard. (The guitar may not be called a JP20 but it looks just like the JP20 with exception to the location of the pickup. This is way way before Ibanez introduced the Metheny models!).
