I have a 2000 AS80 Artstar with Super 58s. I was thinking about selling it in favor of a guitar with p90s or single coils but I just like the feel of the guitar too much. Help me decide on some new pickups... Here is what I play...
I lead worship and mostly play clean to slightly overdriven and almost always chords. The Super 58s get muddy too quickly for me. What pickups would you suggest I get as replacements?

I find that by rolling the(guitar) volume back a touch, the 58's clean up nicely. Roll up the amp volume to compensate, if necessary.

Seymour Duncan Phat Cats or
Lindy Fralin's P-92 or Twangmasters

Probably not the suggestion you're looking for, but here goes anyway:

Get yourself a Strat. Get some EMG "S" or "SA" single coils. You can probably fit the 9V battery in the pot cavity (I did). If not, some have had success putting it into trem cavity...works better if it's blocked. I personally like the S pickups. They produce fantastic articulation, even with 6-string chords.

You can also try adding a treble bypass capacitor acros your volume pots:

If your heart's set on changing p'ups, the previously suggested Duncan Phat Cat might be your ticket. GuitarFetish.com also has similar offering of a P-90 in a humbucker size.

Personally, I'd leave the AS-80 with the Super 58s because I just think Ibanez got it "right" for this guitar. Tone is very subjective, so I respect your desire for something different. Do you know if your tone pots are functioning correctly? I suspect you keep them @ 10.

If you tried it with a variety of amps and have been unable to get the bright, chimey sounds you're seeking, I think you'll need to consider single coils or buckers than can be split.

Changing Super 58's would NOT be my first choice either, but I'm a real Super 58 fan.
Measuring the resistance of the pots while you slowly turn them from 0 to 10 (or 1 to 10 on some guitars like Fender Strat) and vice versa, should show a regular climax or anti-climax from 0-500 kOhm and back. Sometimes you see that a pot on 10 gives less signal than on 8 or something. THAT IS NOT HOW IT SHOULD BE!).
Japanese 500K pots cost about 3.65 euro

And this is NOT the cheapest supplier in Holland. Bostonmupro is even cheaper.

Then you could change the capacitors with orange drops, the way I described here.
