I found a 2629 today that looked interesting. From the serial number, it is a January 1979 build. It's not the cleanest specimen that i've run across, but it does play well. My question is about the tailpiece becuase it does not look like those I have seen in the catalogs. Here is a picture:

Either that's been bent into that position or in some way its distorted itself. I reckon it's been bent by a owner.

I have a Gibson with a similar tailpiece problem. As I understand it the slots weaken the integrity allowing it to be prone to bending.

I have had a couple of tailpieces bent like this, and, oddly enough they were also chrome plated versions.

I have a K78 2629 identical to this - same issue with the tailpiece; they just seem to distort this way over time. Perhaps heavier string gauges contribute?

Could it be possible that chrome plating is done over lower-grade metal (possibly what they call "white metal") while gold plating is done over brass, which is stronger?
