What kind of wood should the top of a 1979 FA100BS be? What would a guitar like this be worth?

1978 catalog: "Arched birch top with selected birch back and rim." It is interesting that NT has maple top and sides.

I didn't find it in 1979 catalogs. 1980 catalog says "maple top".

Any idea how the value of the Birch holds up to the Maple?

Use the ICW search utility and you will find a lot of info. I don't know more, sorry.

Regarding the 1979 fa100bs listed as "birch." It's the first guitar of uts type in the cataloge that follows the "burch" models, could this have been a mistake? I have seen an Elders Price list that descibes the guitar as maple! Has anyone asked an expert if this guitar is in fact "birch?"

Nobody said 'the 1979 fa100bs listed as "birch." ' but you. I quoted 1978 catalog and said I didn't find FA100BS (and NT) in 1979 catalogs.
It takes an expert with 1979 FA100BS on his/her hands to tell for sure. So far we don't have better source than catalogs. If you read the 1978 specs carefully you will see the difference between the specs of FA100BS and the specs of the semihollows. I'd like to see "an Elders Price list", too. Where is it? Yes, there may be mistakes in both catalogs and price lists.
What is wrong with birch? Does your expertice tell it is not good enough wood for making hollowbody guitars?

Talajuha, emailed Jim Donahue, he said the guitar is laminated with a maple veneer top.

Is this seller vs. buyer case?
Sgjazz is buyer and not certain of the value of the 1979 FA100BS?
Hrveylee is seller and tries to convince it is good by any means (thinks maple must be better than birch, brings more money, doesn't know if there is a difference, has heard things - no documents).

So, I am out of this discussion.
Sgjazz, use ICW search.

Juha, the discussion was for information purposes only, not buyer vs. seller. I own the guitar, don't want to sell it, found it interesting that it was listed as birch. Had never come across guitars of this type describing the wood as birch.

This is the price list that started my interest regarding my FA100BS; cut and paste to your browser.

My '78 FA100 has a multi-laminate top at any rate, so I the wood has little if anything to do with the sound. It isn't think, and it is so stiff it isn't really doing much of anything. So, soundwise it should be a moot point (maple or birch); as for whether one is worth more than another I don't know.

Jim777, the guitar I purchased is near mint, beautiful; I'll post pictures in a few weeks. Some people are turned off by a jazz guitar made out of birch, and I have read conflicting information as to what wood it really is. I'm interested to find out what i purchased.

Sounds good, are you using flats or rounds on it? I use rounds on mine for that Steve Howe vibe (BIG Yes fan here).

Jim: I won't receive the guitar till the end of this month, in transit. I'll string it with round wound 13's. I'll be speaking with Jim Donahue next week, as I really would like to know the particulars of this guitar. You have a beautiful guitar!
