I own a 1978 Ibanez model 2635 and when I was doing some work getting it ready for sale I noticed that the pickups have the layout and PAF label on the back identical to Gibson's of the 1950's.
I know Ibanez produced a Super 58 that is refered to as a PAF style, but did they go as far as imitating it right down to the label on the back??
Any first hand knowledge or ideas?

Welcome Sbg3000,

IF your pickups is a real PAF from the 1950's you should NOT sell it with the guitar, but replace it!
Genuine 1950's Gibson parts are worth huge amounts of money.
Even for a pickguard of a 1957 ES-175 they ask very high prices, so an original PAF from 1957 for instance is worth even more!

Could you post a picture of that pickup (front and back)? If it's too difficult you could e-mail it to... as a matter of fact to any other member, but our webmaster Johns is perhaps handier at reducing the size of the file than most of us.

You can mail a forum member by clicking on his blue username on the left. Then you can add the picture as an attachment. If you don't have a digital camera, but you do have a scanner, a colour scan can give good results too. I already scanned a Schaller tailpiece and a 2355 pickguard... no problem. If you want me to help, just send it over and I'll try to post it for you. If I don't get it done, I'll send it to Johns.

So don't sell it, before you know what it is!

Ginger,
Thanks for the response.
Here's the image of the back of the pickup and one of the guitar:

Don't worry I know how valuable the PAF's would be - that's why I'm doing a little homework here. I appreciate all the help i can get.

The covers are soldered on / chrome finish as you can see.

This guitar had Super 80's listed as the original equipment - I have a dealer brochure from the era but it's in black and white and impossible to tell if it's pictured with gold flying fingers covers. Anyone know if all super 80's were put out with the flying fingers covers on them and if any early versions were labeled as PAF with no Super 80 stamp?
The chrome covers on these certainly don't go along with all the rest of the gold hardware but it does look right for a Jazz box.

Thanks again and let me know what you think.
Mark

That pickup looks way too new to be an honest to goodness Gibson PAF. The sticker is the same as a Gibson though, with the P in "Patent" directly over the 2nd P in "Applied", but every real PAF I've seen has has the words line up with the polepieces above them (this sticker would be upside down). Obviously I haven't seen every PAF though ;-) I don't know how that sticker got there, but I doubt that's a real Gibson PAF. Real ones are pricey, at least a grand each and more like 3 grand a matched pair or so to start.

OOOOPS!
I think I've figured out my own quandry. Didn't realize that Gibson put out re-issue PAF's with stickers and all - What schmuks!
Previous owner must have switched them out.

Anywho... I'm listing it for sale in the classified section if anyone looking is interested.

Here's a Photo:

Please don't make me put it on EBAY.
