That's a bit disturbing on this collectors item. Luckily the original tailpiece is there and the gold plating seems to be pretty worn off. A potential candidate for gold replating. Ginger is correct about the new trapeze that is on the guitar now. It was always my intent to get the original re-plated and swap it for the one on there now. One of those things I just never got around to doing. The previous owner put the current trapeze on and to his credit, he left the original part of the tailpiece that screws on to the bottom end of the guitar in place and did not swap that out. Doing so would have required drilling new screw holes to match the spacing on the new part. So what the buyer needs is just a replate job, if he wants that. (Some like to keep it worn off, because it's "original"). Well, with some before and after pics and a receipt, you have enough proof that it is original. Just document it. I don't know what materials are involved in this case. But if there's zinc involved in the string holder, it's necessary to replate it with gold, because zinc itself has a low potential, which means that it oxidates fast. That's why they apply zinc on other metals to bind the oxygen. Recently we have seen some beautiful results of gold replating. This guitar is worth it. I hadn't thought about documenting before and after. Good idea. I'll keep these in mind for a couple other potential applications. Although I go back and forth between restoring to shiny new appearance versus keeping the "character" given by years of use. Jay
