I was wondering if anyone out there can give me a little advice as far as purchasing a new GB10.
1. Everyone kind of thinks the older models are better, but what is the current opinion as far as the quality of the current models, pickups, finish, setup, etc..??
2. Does anyone know the magnet type, DC resistance, etc.. of the floating neck pickup for the gb10 ?? Someone told me it is very hot, like 12k.
Thanks

I bought a 79 GB 10 about 4 months ago, and I have played a new one, there is nothing like the old ones. Especially pre 80 or 81. Just watch out for the disintegrating pick guards. (Just do a search on the site and you will find out what I am talking about)

Rguit,

I skipped answering on this thread the other day - you sated that you realized "everyone kind of thinks the older models are better, but..."

Well let me chime in here with Cmangeot, the older ones ARE better. So knowing that I would suggest looking for an older one. There have been a recent GLUT of older ones on eBay recently - and going for very reasonable prices... The blonde ones especially have developed a nice patina to their finish and really are incredibly good guitars. The contents of my meager guitar collection comes and goes, but my early '81 GB10 will always be around.

As for the newer models, the ones I have seen just looked inferior to me. And since you CAN find an older one in very good condition for about the same amount of money (or if your timing is right LESS money) why not go that route ??

Good luck finding the guitar of your dreams - the GB10s really are great guitars.

GB10's come available for most production years. Just have to keep an eye out. I've not seen any dogs in the bunch, but some are better than others however. I've got a '79 that is a fantastic player and a (pre-Prestige) '97 that kills most other GB10's. The build consistency of these guitars is part of their desireability. If you can actually play one prior to purchasing that is best.

Here are a few currently available on Gbase:

I got my 79 blonde GB10 off of Gbase and I was really happy. (I had to have my luthier replace the heel cap binding, but it was inexpensive) I also agree with Mike, the top's color has aged so beautifully, as well as the nice yellowing of the binding. I could not ask for a better guitar. I have all kinds, and none come close. If the darned thing was not in such perfect shape, I would put roundwounds on it and gig with it 3 nights a week!!!

Go for the old ones, Pre 84.

Thanks for the info, I really didn't know whether the pre-prestige thing was important or not. I had a 95 GB10 but thought the pickup was too dark and replaced it with a custom JS style Seymour Duncan. I then did a bunch of other stuff that I regret doing, and then sold it.

Bottom line is that for the money that you have to pay and the functionality that I am looking for, (mostly a jazz player and don't want feedback), everything else out there costs more and doesn't play as well. Thanks for all the input.

Does anybody know about the pickup ?? DC resistance, magnet type, etc.. ?
