I don't hear much about AS-50s. Given excellent condition, Gibson PAFs and a new case, what do you all think about the $799 Buy It Now? |

Non-original pup and case make this a player. As such, I would say $550. |

Thanks, Acetan. What about tone as compared to all the other AS models, which are slightly larger? Would you expect to get the full ES335 fat tone from an AS-50? For that matter, how does the AM series tone compare to that from a full ES335-sized body (other things being equal, though of course they never really are). Generally, does tone sharpen up a bit as a semi-hollow body gets smaller? |

My experience is that the AM's lean towards the solid body Artists a little bit more than the larger AS50/100/200 tonally. I found the tone of different Ibanez semi-acoustics vary even within the same model line. I have owned a 2630, 2 AS50's, 3 AS100's and 2 AS200's, the best in terms of tone is an AS50. In fact, it is the only AS I now own. The one thing I've noticed is that it is lighter than normal and when I measured the top at the f-hole, the thickness of the wood is about 20% thinner than all the others. It is very lively and responsive when I play it, very close to an early 60's Gibson 335 I used to own.
The AM's are quite different and are not as "acoustic" as the larger AS series. I like the models with mahogany tops and think the maple top models sound a bit too bright. I've hanged on to my AM205, 255 and 300, all have mahogany tops, and sold the AM50 which has maple. What I like about the AMs is that they are very comfortable to play with great tone. My favorite AMs are all warm and mellow and are great for everything from rock to blues.

The AM bridge pups with the tone rolled back about three quarters, and with a good dose of overdrive from my Zvex to a Marshall 2x12 Greenbacks is awesome. The sound is really saturated, "drippy", and full. The V2 from the AS50 is hotter still and compares very nicely to my solid body guitars.
The Zvex is a hard rocker's dream, too much for me though. I usually just turn it to 3 for a full but still clean sound and is not using it to the full potential.
