Hey everyone

This might seem rather genaric; but I am wondering of those of you who use the super 58's for jazz still think about distortion? I use to think Sco had the sickest distortion and sound. I attributed all of it to the rat pedal; but I am findding now that I have this Japan AS 100 I am getting that bite I looked for way back. Do any of you use distortion? I am thinking It might almost be redundant unless you want that Kurt Rosenwinkel "heartcore" sound. Most of the time you want to just cut through the mix in the jazz setting.
Lastly, what kind of amps are you all using with the Semi's? I am using a Roland Cube30 and it works fine; but you can always look right?
Just some thoughts.

I have an AS120 with super 58's and I play jazz through a vox valvetronix ad30 watt. I use the fender and ac30 and ac15 settings. I add a little gain manually (one of the great features of the amp) for that slight distorted sound when heavy picking for emphasis, but not allways...I prefer the clean sound and both the Ibanez and the vox come through beautifully.

I never use a distortion pedal, just overdrive the amp, and with the S-58's, I get a nice creamy tone. I like the tone from them better than the 'buckers in my Gibby V.

The sound of the guitar really comes through with the Super 58. You can really delve into that Scofield dirty tone with an AS. I think it's more the guitar itself than the pickup.

Oh I LOVE the guitar so much. To me I would have paid way more for it. It has PERFECT mids. They shine through and the 58's give it that extra kick in the to cut through the mix. Maybe it is the guitar though. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!! The only thing about the 58's is they can get muddy/Funkle I think you might have said that. But for now it is pretty tolerable. There would have to be some really nice pickups to not take away from the uniquness of this guitar out there for me to even think of putiing in.
I'd sell my Roland Cube if I could find a decent Polytone and had some scratch saved. Though I hear they are like that super hot girlfriend we all get once. Super particular and kind of a pain in the because they can be a little high maitenance. For now the cube seems like it will be fine for music school.

I've been p playing my S-58's through a Fender Blues Jr. lately, and it's a good sounding amp. It came upgraded from the factory with Groove Tubes. I got the amp because my Mesa DC5 is just too strong for rehearsals and a few of the clubs I play. At 15 watts, I can turn up the volume a bit, and push the tubes to a nice level of overdrive.

Watch your language Jazz!

I regularly play through a Polytone Taurus and fender tube amps, but I still haven't found anything I like better than my Yamaha DG80-112. Covers all my styles with ease. It is really a versatile, great sounding amp.

Funkle--does a mid-late 1980's Korean AM50 with set neck have Super 58's? I know it is a step down from the Japanese AM50's, just as the bolt -on Korean AS50 is a step down from the set neck Japanese AS50's.

But if the Korean AM50's have Super 58's and have a set-neck, is it really that much of a step down? (I know the bridge is different...)

Does this have Super 58's?

Brutus, I don't know that much about the Korean AM50.

One thing that makes the Japanese made Ibanez guitars stand out is their fretwork and necks. This is where the korean models fall short IMO. Nothing that $300 and a good luthier can't fix.

Thanks for your ideas. When I get it, I'll check out the frets and playability. Playability is really important. I'll let you all know what's up when I get it. I figure that for $250 that I paid, (plus shipping, $100), if I have a set neck Super 58 Ibanez semi, I'll probably be okay and could probably sell it for something like what I paid if I want to upgrade eventually.

But, of course, if the frets or neck are really miserable, or the wiring or body has problems, well......

You did good at $250. I look forward to a full review. I remember one other account of a Korean AM50, which the owner said was a great guitar.
