Roland Cube 30 (or 60)

After seeing Jimmy Bruno using a Fender Accoustasonic Junior on a DVD I own, I traded my Fenders Prinston Stereo Chorus and Accoustasonic 30 for it. It has the Stereo features of the Prinston with the tone of the 30, but with a bit more power. Picked 'er up 2 weeks ago and I'am real pleased with the tone. I figured if it was good enough for him . . . ?;^)~

Any of the modern, solid state amp: (i.e. Roland JC120; Evans; Polytone; Tech21 TM60; Yamaha; etc.)
or
Any of the more powerful (for clean head-room) tube amps: (i.e. Fender Twin Reverb's new 15"; almost any Victoria amp; Heritage jazz amps; etc.)

I use either a Fender Blues Jr. or Mesa MK IV and even got a great jazz sound from an SWR Strawberry Blonde acoustic amp.

I love my Clarus 1R by itself or with a Tech 21 Tri AC plugged into my homemade 2 x 10 speaker cab. I've got a Raezer's Edge NY8 cab on the way which I hope and think will make a great jazz setup.

Acousti image or evanz if you don't mind to spend a grand
Fender twin reverb or Roland jazz chorus if you don;t care the weight.

Polytone! if you care the money and the portability!

I always have to give my standard Yamaha plug: My DG80-112 has a very full, warm sounding tone for jazz. Like it better than the Plolytone Taurus or Fender tube amps my teacher has.

Doesn't matter what amp you use as long as you can carry it and you can play, most of the name players just use what somebody gives them for free, Now, I'm sure most of you know that !! I have played everything made as long as I could carry it and rarely did it make a difference on a gig that I felt like I sucked on. Its all in your ideas,

Just bought a secondhand Tech21 Trademark 60, its a very good jazz amp ,great sound warm and clean, actually it beats my Polytone.Tech21 makes great stuff, i borrowed from JohnM a PSA SansAmp 1.0 preamp and used it for a recording ,great clean jazz presets too, wow no need for tubes...if somebody has one for sale just email me.

Artfield, how much headroom do you feel the TM60 has for clean jazz at loud volumes? I played through a TM30 and thought it's clean channel sounded great, but it would stay clean when the amp was pushed. Wondering how the TM60 does at it, thinkin it might just be enough for gigs and such?

I meant to add that I have and like my Roland Cube 60. The black face channel sounds very tube like.

One new amp I've been looking at seriously is the new Fender Jazzmaster Ultralight head/cab.

Jazzgeetar, i did a couple of gigs recently with my Trademark 60 , just simple club stuff straight-ahead jazz.....believe me it was loud and the sound there even when i put it softer...it was every dynamic...what i like about this amp is that the sound stays in your neighbourhood (actually i don't know how to explain this in english....) even for the audience everything is clear.

The Trademark60 is such a handy amp too.

FG100 i don't know the 120 version...but it much bigger....

Cool, sounds like the TM60 has enough power for gigging. The TM120 is out of production now, though you could find them used still I'm sure. I'm pretty sure they are dual 60 watt amps (like the Roland JC120) as opposed to one 120 watt amp. So it's like having a TM60 and one of their Power Engines. Now they have the TM60 in 2x12 and 4x10 cabs. And they have the TM300 head, which I bet is loud with ridiculus clean headroom.

I do recommend the Cube 60 for a compact, affordable combo for jazz. The JC channel and the black face model/channel are great for clean jazz with a good amount of headroom. It's light and compact. The models on it are pretty good for drive versatility too.

I've always been a tube guy (and still use one in a rock/jamband), but recently I'm getting tired of the tube mantainence and tone inconsistency. Some of the better solid state amps (roland, tech 21, fender, etc) clean tones are just as good. I find it's the tube drive/gain that's hardest to emulate, and even that now is close.

The Acoustic Image Clarus head seems to be what a lot of jazz pros are using these days. The Fender Jazzmaster Ultralight that I mentioned earlier, and might get, seems to be in the same market as this Clarus.

I wish we could edit our posts so I wouldn't have to keep posting new ones when I forgot something. :-)

I know that no one really cared about what I said earlier but most of us have gotten so carried away with gear, (including myself), I get concerned with what is going on with the whole idea of creating music, I know this isn't the forum for this, but I think Ibanez makes guitars that WORK, sound great for jazz and are cost effective, what other jazz guitar company is doing that. But the discussion someone has to start having is, (did guys like tal farlow, Jimmy raney, george benson, billy bean, who you may not know, etc. sit around and discuss gear so much, or did they write tunes and practice and play because they really didn't have the money to keep buying more stuff. Blame myself for becoming too gear oriented as well. All the amps here mentioned will sound great if the guy playing the axe is practicing writing and trying to make his mark.

Thanks Artfield and jazzgeetar... I just saw a 2nd hand TM120 and a TM60 for sale. Also a PSA SansAmp 1.0 preamp... I have an AER Domino. It is good but I want another option... Sure the TM120 will be heavier, but what about sound? It has 2x12" 60w. The TM60 I saw is 1x12". Now there're the newer versions with 2x12" or 4x10" ... How does this all affect the sound?
What would you guys suggest?

Rguit, I don't know the specifics of Benson, Farlow, etc. but I think great players come in all flavors. Some are interested in gear and some are not. I think you have agreat point though. I know if spent the time I devoted to fretting over gear to practice I would probably be a better guitarist (or have tendonitis even worse than I do).

Still, Rguit, it's refreshing, after a long practice session, to logon to a place that ENCOURAGES discussion on music and equipment. The only other person in my household would rather discuss decorating the house.
Some people tend to be a kill-joy with putdowns and know-it-all-isms in the name of trying to be clever.
It's great to be able to talk with people who enjoy the same things and actually WANT to talk about them without all that mess. Chow. ?;^)~

HA, that's great, decorate the house, believe me, I know where you are coming from, I'm there now !! I certainly am in no way putting down musicians in search of the best sound and gear, I have been in this gear loop since I got a DAY gig, LOL, before that I just looked. One last thought, any nice Roland JC-120 or 90 amp, Fender twin if you can carry it, (polytone I've given up on), or Evans, I have one and I think it is the closest solid-state amp I have played that sounded like a tube fender, IMHO. I have the JE-150 which I don't think they make anymore. Also legatoguitars just got these JazzKat amps which are 23 pounds, and get 110 watts with a full alesis nanoverb built in for like 700 or so. i may try one

I recommend:
PETERSON P100G Guitar amp. Very good clean sound. It has an Electro Voice Speaker and 100 Watts. It´s a little beautiful looking amp (mahogani wood case) and easy to carry around.

I'm with rquit on this subject because Jazz is not the amp you use , or the guitar for that matter. Unless you just want to emulate the sounds of previous Jazz players... you are then copying, or living vicariously through others. Jazz is your feelings, how you live, how you see the world and how you want to communicate those things to others, or even for yourself... its a personal expression. We can agree that George Benson is a great Jazz player, or Branford Marsalis etc...But that is because they express themselves via their chosen TOOLS. I've heard great Jazz on an Ibanez Artwood acoustic with no amp.

Joe, we should get this subject going somewhere else, the music industry especially the jazz stuff, has gotten so gear oriented, all the name guys make sure they have a section on their site for gear, the funny thing is that the rock and blues players seem less focused on gear than jazz players nowadays, Not sure what happened, Day gigs maybe !!!

This is true Joe. Even name players have influences though. Although they may not sound exactly like the other person, there was SOMETHING in the style that appealed to them and led them in a certain direction.
If you are 100% trailblazer and do something no one else has done, great. If a certain style appeals and you want to lean in that direction, more power to ya.

Wait a second.....Jazz guys care about gear becasue they care about tone and "their sound." Your own sound and the gear you use inspires you differently. I need a little bit of delay and some reverb and i hear my lines differently. Plug me in to some crappy amp I will still sound like me; but the tone from the amp will be less inspiring. Jazz guys care about detail and the art and how the art comes out. These new rock guys out there now don't know much about music and tone. Whatever it is there choice and the public likes it. But don't knock jazz guys for caring about their sound.

No one is knocking Jazzmen at all...All I'm trying to say is working fervently to have the right equipment to sound like someone else detracts from what Jazz is all about. Of course we want to emulate the greats, to learn, and of course we want decent equipment, to use for our own expressions, but we do not need to reinvent the wheel. We need to grow more and more...e.g. thats what Coltrane was all about...it took many years for musicians to appreciate that.

Ya I never said I was ripping someone's tone. Those are the guys that when at clinics ask, " What kind of cables to you use? What kind of picks are you using?" Stuff of that nature. I use delay to thicken my sound a slight bit and reverb to wet the signal. Look Kurt Rosenwinkel uses dealy so automatically everyone goes Oh Oh Oh you are ripping on kurt. But that is false other guys who sound darastically different use delay, Johnathan Kreisberg and Bill Frisell come to mind.
But I do agree about Coltrane. He has totally insprired me in my practice. I have been working with diminished stuff for months and you can just keep expanding one concept. Coltrane was the master of that.

Sometimes, Kurt Rosenwinkel sounds like he's underwater. I'd rather hear him play without all the processing.

There's so much gear out there today that I don't even understand it all. It's almost like we're trying to make the guitar sound like another instrument. I like the basic, old stuff: some analog delay, some OD, maybe a little Univibe sometimes, and a nice tube amp, but I can't get my head around too much else. One of my favorite guitarists now has 24 send/returns on his pedalboard routing system--I'd be lost, but that's freedom of choice.

After, a while its just a big gear loop like Jimmy Bruno calls it, sooner or later you got just play and forget the stuff, but, then again, getting that great tone is just plain fun, maybe not great art, but fun !! For guys who already can play its cool, but if you still stuggle with what notes to play over "all the things you are" because you are not sure what scales harmonize with what chords, you sort of missed a step, a big step !!!

Last night I caught Pat Martino at Yoshi's in Oakland. Arguably, he is one of the world's best (living) jazz guitarists. His rig?

Acoustic Image Clarus head with two Mesa Boogie 4/12 cabinets sitting right behind him. Also, the speakers were miked to the house PA. Sounded fantastic.

After the show, I met him at an autograph signing and casually asked about his sound. Martino's response was something like "...With todays electronics, you can sound like anything you want...".

With his talent, he would have sounded great through any rig. Great show!

Pat Martino has played just about every type of guitar imaginable and just about every type of amp. If you guys follow him you know that prior to using acoustic image, he used mesa and also I saw him here in philly in 1995 playing a JC-120 with that custom guitar built by abe "forget his last name", point being, no matter what amp or gear he uses, he still sounds like Pat before and after the amnesia, figure that one out. He lived a couple blocks from me, great person and very open but a little different approach to life. Last comment for all of us to remember, these are only tools not the finished product, we build something with these guitars and amps, that hopefully someone won't forget !!!
I will post a pic of one of my guitars that I will never sell if someone offered me twenty thousand, its a Ibanez johnny smith copy that I took off the floaters and had an excellent tech put a full-size humbucker install, its more of an L5 now. I had it since 78 and its part of my soul. I just can't believe Ibanez made it and I got it for like 450 with the case. The neck has barely budged an inch, i use 13-56 gauge strings on there. Blows my mine how much better ibanez is than gibson at building guitars.

Everyone has their own sound in their sence of swing. Look at Pat, you think eights/sixteenths....and they keep going and going at a mind blowing rate. A guy like Rosenwinkel swings pretty straight. Not to mention the fact he in recent years has done a tremendous amount of work with triads and pentatonics. Of course he is going to sound like himself on a pawn shop amp. About his sounding underwater......I guess that works to me his sound is haunting. It seems to come from the shadows more that from underwater; but it is beautiful. MAN he is the one guy who has done something profoundly unique and different with jazz and guitar in the now.

Rguit, I have to tell ya the Ibanez is just as good as my gibby. I strung them both with D'addario chrome flatwound 13's. Compared them EXHAUSTIVELY. They are the same scale (24 3/4), approx. size (15 3/4" - 16") accross lower bout. The Ibanez is a bit thinner depth wise (2 3/4 vs 3 3/8).
They play, feel, and sound VERY close. With the vast difference in price, that's quite an accomplishment indeed!
And talk about people not forgetting my playing. I'll say thay won't - it's TERRIBLE! Chow buddy. ?;^)~

OK, heres my two cents again, try a FENDER HOT ROD DELUXE, this is about the best deal going for $400 or less on the used market, much better than a Polytone in my opinion, 40 tube watts, fender reverb, etc, at about 50 lbs, my second choice is Fender deluxe reverb, black face, what say you??

sometimes i play through a fender hot rod deluxe at the rehearsals ... and i must say ... it is definately NOT a jazz amp. the sound is always distorted ! i hardly managed to get some clean tones ... complex jazz chords are a complete failure through this amplifier ! nothing but mud ! i had to turn the volume knob on the guitar almost all the way down ! fortunately, there's another amp at the rehearsal studio - hughes&kettner silver edition, wich i prefer most, because it's solid state and WAY more clean sounding. it's just my humble opinion.

I have to agree with jazzzbo here, Hot Rod Deluxe is great for jazz and has a good amount of clean headroom. If someone has experienced otherwise, there must have been something wrong with it. I used a HRdlx for several years with great result. Right now I'm useing a ri '65 Deluxe Reverb with 6L6 power tubes and its tone is a little more pristine than the HRD but it doesn't have as much clean headroom. If you follow the link you can here me play jazz live through a Fender Deluxe Reverb.

Does anyone have a preference to speakers. sizes and brand? I know I have amps with 12's and 10's and I find I like one ot the other depending on the guitar I use at the time.

I used to have a Fender Prosonic which is a 2-10 and it sounded great for both jazz and rock. DRRI is a 1-12 and sounds similar at lower volumes but is not as tight as the Prosonic at higher volumes. Probably due to the drri's 22watts as opposed to the Prosonic's 50w.

Dvsleeko, that sure looks interesting and it's affordable. Wonder how it will stack up against the good old Fenders.... and I'd like to see it as a 1-12 combo. 2-12 is generally very heavy...

sounds to me like Zhen got a bad HOt rod deluxe or is playing on the more gain channel, all i can say is that mine, made in mexico has a very nice sound, for complex chords , solos etc, all stock amp, my other amps are black face Deluxe reverb and silver face PRO reverb, the deluxe reverb and pro are very pricey, so, the hot rod fits the bill, ps, i love 12'" spks for everything, j

hey, that's a Corean made Epiphone Broadway. I also have an Ibanez mod.2355 (es175) form around 1973-74 which sounds better but the neck is just too narrow for me. I might sell it to afford something better, like a L-4 or L-5 Ibanez.

has anybody here ever heard of aer amps. they are just great. over the years i tried a lot of different amps from fender to boogie to polytone to peavey to yamaha to ........ endless list, but got stuck with two aer compact 60's. for small gigs i use one, i use a second one for larger stages in stereo mode. the sound is very acoustic, the amp is light, easy to carry and sounds great for jazz.

Yeah, Jazznote... I have an AER Domino and I find it very good for acustic and artchops. It's very natural sounding. True, it's bigger than the Compact 60...
I was actualy thinking about getting a Compact Classic or Compact 60 as a smaller option for carrying around. The reason why I bought the Domino (and not the Bingo) is that I found one very cheap. Couldn't let it pass.

I love the Polytone amps. George Benson has been using them for years.
I have a Maxi-Brute 104 which is like new, and a 103, which needs some restauration work. It misses a few original potmeter knobs, and the last time I tried it, I discovered a power problem, possibly just the feeder cable. I must contact Dick Visser for spare parts. We lacked an official distributor for several years in Holland, but Dick's the man now. Service from North-Hollywood was really bad in the early nineties. I hope I'll get somewhere now.

The Mini-Brutes are also very good and less heavy. Most jazz session players I know use them.

Anybody out there have any experience with the Carvin Vintage tube amps...the Vintage 16 or the Nomad? They seem to compare favorably (maybe even better) than the Fenders (Hot Rod Deluxe and Blues Jr). The Carvins have Celestion vintage 30 speakers and Groove Tubes. Your thoughts?

I just bought one of these Jazzkat amps from Legato Guitars.

http://www.gbase.com/Powered/GearDetails.aspx?Dealer=23977a0b-6862-43e3-b8ff-9de cb2a97f79&Item=867062

It's a little funny looking but it's "cute" like my Pug Martha

I was comparing guitars and playing thru this Evans:

http://www.gbase.com/Powered/GearDetails.aspx?Dealer=23977a0b-6862-43e3-b8ff-9de cb2a97f79&Item=791502

The owner, Bill Fender, casually asked me to try the Jazzkat to see how it compared. I couldn't tell the difference. Both had that nice warm jazzy tube tone - only the jazzKat is solid state.
I wasn't even there to look at amps but I left with the Jazzkat. The 'ol "puppydog" sales technique worked like a charm on me. ?;^(
But I really do like it. . .
