I suppose I should have come here first, but I've got a 1978 2630 (that's the more upscale of the 335 copies, right?) that's been missing the pickguard since I bought it and I'd like to replace it one of these days. Anybody got one out there in decent shape with the hardware? It doesn't have to be perfect; the guitar isn't either!

I'll take one also if any are available.

My 2630's guard gassed out several years ago, damaging everything around it, so I removed it and put it in a plastic bag.

That was very typical of Ibanez plastic pickguards of that era.

Formula73:

As Tim points out, the original pickguards just don't hold up over time and can severely damage a beautiful guitar. Been there, done that with my GB10. Finding an original Ibanez pickguard for a 2630 that has not already started to deteriorate is going to be a real difficult, if not impossible task.

Would you consider a replacement guard?

Tim:

I pulled my old GB10's pickguard out of a drawer today and then found that I had a greasy, smelly substance on my fingers, afterwards. Anybody else notice this on their deteriorating pickguard? For some reason, I thought that these would dry out and crumble, not liquify.

How about you? Ever consider a replacement? Would you want an exact tortoise shell replica or maybe go for something more custom?

John~

That sounds nasty! I have my old 2630 guard packed away...somewhere. I kept it in the hopes of using it as a template for a custom pickguard. Now I've gotten used to the clean look of it.

Well, I might be persuaded to go for a replacement but everything's gotta line up just right. Ill - fitting pickguards drive me absolutely nuts. I suppose I'd actually try to go with a dirty cream color to match my discolored pickup rings. Come to think of it, they might have been discolored from the original pickguard! LOL!

Funny this as the pickguard om my 2629 looks like the same material as the 2630 guard but it hasn't deteriorated at all.

The 2630 guard has a white binding glued to the main tortoise shell plastic of the guard. I wonder if it's the glue that binds these parts together that causes the disitigration problem over time?

You know, I never really thought about it, but I noticed when I bought the thing that the treble side of the pickup rings was (and still is) discolored and the gold plating on the pickups was (is) also worn off the treble side. Does this have to do with this 'gassing out?' Maybe that's why the pickguard was long gone when I got it!

Formula.....Sounds typical of the 2629/30 of that era-you should also know that -if the guitar was in the case when the damage happend (which is highly probable), the case may STILL be doing damage-even after the offending pickguard has been removed !

Good point Dave. What about leaving the case out to air for a few weeks?

The original case has been...gone...for some time. Call it temporary insanity. At least I know that it's not doing any more damage to the guitar!

I just bought a 2630 that needs a pick guard and bracket. Does anyone know where to obtain a good replica? I'd be fine with a copy.

Is it the same pick guard as my AS180 or AS100?
