What are we to make of this?

Just on the pics posted, there's a divergence from the 1983/4 US catalogue at Ibanez Rules, where the f holes are violin rather than "D'Aquisto" stylized. The headstock would be the giveaway. Could this be an Artstar, rather than an Artist as in the catalogue? That would have the 3-piece maple/mahogany/maple neck. Still a great instrument. I owned one.

I was the guy he mentions, who bought the 1980 one for 1325 USD. It was a 1980 AS200 in pristine condition, with Super 70's.

That's BLOCK not BLOCKL.

I have this keyboard problem. When I go for K, I hit L. How do you adjust the truss rod on this thing?

That does not look like an '83 to me.

There are the f-holes, which you mentioned, and the pickup rings are 2-screw, rather than the 3-screw type that would have been used.

The finish, burst pattern and hardware all look very new to me. I bet it's a newer model

A picture of the headstock would be the givaway. Why didn't he show this?

Feedback score of 2?

I personally wouldn't touch this guitar without more information.

Now this is interesting.

I've brightened up the second pic on Adobe Photoshop, to check the knobs, which looked black. They're Suregrip 2's, so that's OK. You know what the background is? It's lying on the guy's lawn. One thing I've noticed about most people's pics of their favourite old Ibanezes on and off this board is that their pride and joy is mostly in its case, on a rack / stand, or lying on their matrimonial bed or sofa!

Those 2 feedback points are Oct and Dec 2004 as a buyer.

Anyone looking at this guitar should ask questions big time. Carpe Diem. But, hey, Caveat Emptor.

The first catalog photo I can find that has the features this guitar has (flame maple on an angle, Gibraltar II bridge, modern f-holes and single pickup adjustment screws on each side) is 1998.

You'll never guess what!

I contacted / confronted the seller. He had lifted those pictures from the net, thinking they'd be better 'cos they were higher resolution! He's sent me some gorgeous pics that he's now taken himself, and it looks like the real deal.

I urged him to post them to the eBay listing and I now suspect that one or two of you out there are going to make a serious bid, even if only in those "inarguable" dying seconds!

Phatphred:

Glad to hear that this "mystery" has been figured out and that the seller is on the up and up.

Can you send the photos to my email address? I'll post them here, too.

Looks like that AS200 has live a good life.
Very sweet piece.
