hello community,

i do not often post here, but maybe you have some input for me?

i have an as 83 with which i am very happy - i even play it more often than my custom shop gibson goldtop. seems to be just the right axe for me, everything considered. i even like the sound, but still - in search of the perfect sound - plan to install new pickups.

i already have one of the rare dimarzio SCHB DM106, which, although i don't know it's sound yet, will possibly be the neck pu.

as a replacement for the bridge i have the gibson classic 57 or maybe - at a third it's price - the ibanez super 58.

soundwise i am leaning strongly towards warm und full and rich sounds la larry carlton (last nite) that still are usable for slightly distortet chordwork.

any input is highly appreciated!

thanks in advance and cheers from germany

Oliver,

I put a Seymour Duncan Custom Custom in the bridge position of my AS200, and to my ears it is very "Carlton-esque".

It is a little hotter than a PAF style, but less bright and very smooth and laid back. It will nock a little of the brightness off, and produce a nice "aaaah" kind of sound. Really a very good match for a 335 style guitar if you want a nice singing bluesy overdrive kind of sound. It can growl too if you dig in.

Aside from that, the obvious choice would be a good aftermarket Alnico PAF style, like the ones you mentioned. I've had good luck with Dimarzio PAF classics. PAFs can get a little bright in a maple guitar IMO.

I recommend good humbuckers with Alnico 2 or 3 magnets. I personally live HighOrder pickups for quality, price, and tone. use whatever floats your boat. Pickups wound a bit hotter than a PAF would also be recommended.

Alnico 2 - Warm, rich in harmonic content.
Alnico 3 - Similar to alnico 2 but with more clarity and note definition.

By the way, the original Super58 used Alnico 3, so it would make my recommended list.
