Good morning to my brothers in Ibanez,

I was wondering, if any of you ever had any string buzzing issues out of Artstar semis. I have an As-80, from which I am getting a wicked rattle on the B' string (only when played open). The neck is straight, strings are fine, and the tuners are tight. I have checked for any contact with the frets and I have also checked around the bridge. I have even had it set up by 2 different techs. Neither of which could get it to stop. Any suggestions? Should I just use it for firewood?

I doubt it's firewood but if you're considering barbequing with it, you can ship it to me instead. :-)

String buzz can be caused by lots of things. The symptom you described (being limited to just one string and only when it is open) might indicate string height at the nut.

You might consider taking it to a repair person to have a quick diagnosis and repair quote.

Good luck...and move away from the matches.

This may be a dumb question, but have you changed the strings? Could be a bad string, or too light for the neck tension.

If the two repair techs could not fix the problem, I'd consider taking it to third for another attempt. Before that however, consider raising the action very slightly. Or if the neck is straight as you've indicated, maybe a bit of neck relief is needed.

I had some buzzing in my AS200 and these steps helped eleviate it.

Good luck.

Your Highness,

One good trick to get you out of trouble, if it actually is the depth of the groove cut into the nut, is to pour a drop of superglue into the groove and let it harden. After some hours (I'd leave a whole day) put the string back in place and pound to a penny the noise will be gone!

This is even more effective where the nut is, as I believe it is on all Artstars, plasticky bone only, i.e. no brass. There should be no discernible difference in tone and, remember, the string does not actually start to vibrate until a little distance away from the nut on the open string anyway. If it doesn't work, the superglue can easily be removed (and all excess if you stay with the fix) using a scalpel, no need to mess with solvents. Be careful with those royal digits!

Guys, please don't get all sanctimonious on ol' Phats over this. This is an old luthier's trick that they use if they've filed the thing down too far, whether they'll admit to it or not.

If that doesn't work, then you will need to divert your attention elsewhere. Are you sure this is not something loose that's resonating? Could be a loose component among the electrics, or delamination somewhere.

Your most humble and obedient servant.

Phatphred,

I knight you "Sir Phatphred!" The superglue trick seems to have worked. Thanks for all the help guys. Now, I have some Freddie King to go play.

They are on the 2001 parts list as a set (bridge included):
http://www.ibanez.com/parts/2001_PARTS/EL-GUITAR/PARTS-PICT/2GB1FT2C.HTM#2GB1FT2 C

But you could try this:

Good luck,
