I dig my ArtCore AK85 but the pickguard is hideous. Does anyone happen to know where I can find a 5-ply bk/wht/bk/wht/bk pickguard that will fit the AK85? I know there are a few guys that will custom-make them but I'd rather buy "off the rack" if you will.

I would say, that's a step back.
Your original pickguard is dark violin sunburst fig wood. Black pickguards are cheaper.
But if that's what you want:
There's pickguard heaven, where you can choose the material. You need material 122 or 124 which is class C.
The newer Artcore types are not yet in the list, but if you measure the pickup distances, you can compare them to other Ibanez types or the Gibson ES-175 or an Epiphone. They ask $24.= for C.
http://pickguards.us/index.html

I think that's quite expensive.
Perhaps this is a better option:
the E-1-4B (4 layer ES-175 for €12.=) from this Dutch site:
http://www.backandforth.nl/scratchplates.html

I advise you to keep the original pickguard in the case. They will be harder to get than a black ES-175 pickguard if you want to sell the guitar after 10 years or so.

Don't forget to measure!
Or take your pickguard to the guitar shop and try if it fits on the Gibson ES-175.
If so the reverse operation will work too.
Also take a good look at the position of the
pickguard support.

Good luck!

Try tracing it out around the edge on a piece of poster board and mark the screw holes. Also check Ibanez.com for a Artcore that may have a guard that you may like. Then search the parts area for it get the number and order it.

Nothing to check out Freak1960,
It's an empty form.
Please correct the link, because I'm curious too and I'm quite sure I'm not the only one.

Greetz,

FYI...I had a pickguard custom made by Bill Gagnon of Gagnon Guitars in Portland, OR. It's beautiful; made of solid ebony with a koa binding and maple purfling. Bill shaped it like his archtop pickguards but with my AK85 dimensions. Fits perfectly and he also made me an ebony truss rod cover as well. Check out Bill's website www.gagnonguitars.com - the Ventura model.

Trickeydave, yer giving me a complex here ;o)

To each his own all the way, but I actually like the guard on my AK85. I'm glad it's real wood, and has some heft, and I think it looks classy with the matching dark violin burst. But, hey, that's me! I hope you like the new guard.

Best of luck,
droo

BTW, I really dig my AK85 too. I bought the guitar with the intention of swapping out the pups, as I really wanted a P-90 equipped guitar. So I did, and I like....a lot. It's my favorite one for sure.

And, thanks for the tip on Gagnon Guitars. I didn't know it, but he lives just up the street from me!! Go figure.

Hey Droo! Please don't get a complex over this!! I'm just kinda doing my own thing on the AK85. A bunch of upgrades: new p-guard, truss rod cover, machine heads, pickups, bridge, ba, ba, ba. I originally had a pickguard made out of wenge, but it just didn't work for me. The stock one...I just prefer a solid toned guard. And actually, the AK85 looks great without any pickguard. P-90's eh? Cool. I'm sure it sounds great. I have custom P-90s on my Epiphone Casino. They have their own sound for sure.

Aren't Gagnon Guitars great? I'm saving my pennies for one...but it'll be hard to get approval from the wife on that one!

Hey Droo! I saw your comments on Fenderforum (I think) touting Vintage Vibe p'ups (Pete Biltoft)...are they the ones mentioned here...P-90s? If so, those are the same ones I have on my Epi Casino MIK. Are you happy with your tone?

Dave
