Hi everyone,
Recently my strap broke and I managed to bash my jack halfway into my guitar. After crying, I was able to find some generic jack plates for about $5 online, but does anyone have any advice for the installation? Would I just be better off taking it to a repair person? If so, how much do you think I could expect to be charged? How much would be a ripoff?

Hi Justin,
Use a 2" by 2" piece of metal plate (brass or aluminium on the inside to support the jack input. Drill a hole with the input diameter in it and use it as a washer.
Wood and finish damage on the outside you can probably cover up with the (Les Paul?) jack plate. Finish repairs are expensive!
You can use the smallest gold plated tuner screws to mount the jack plate.
I read John Scofield reinforced his jack input with a metal plate too, so... why wouldn't you?
Use a long bent artery clamp to hold the jack input and rectangular washer in place (through the lower f-hole).
Consider using a cable with a hooked jack.
I use Cordial by Neutrik. This reduces the stress on the input.
The price will depend on the hour rate. They vary:
$25.00-$60.00 per hour, so
$37.50-$90.00 I guess.
Personally I would ask the repairman to name his hour price and his contract price, and than I wouldn't accept an hour price higher than $40.00 and a contract price higher than $60.00
If you bring your prepaired parts yourself and the wood damage is not too big, it must be possible to fix it cheaper than that.
But I'm pretty sure you can do it yourself.
