Hi all,
I have a 81' as200. I love the guitar, but it just doesnt stay in tune as well as it should. I am planning on replacing the tuners. Are there any direct replacements out there that are available? Grovers, Spertzels? suggestions.
Tks,
Trent

Trent,

If your guitar has Velve Tuners, with the mounting screw directly below (in line with the post, not offset) then Grovers should be a drop in replacement. Either the standard or locking Rotomatic will work. I had the same slipage problem with the tuners on my AR100, and Rotomatics solved it.

It seems they have offset mounting screws. But there is also a screw directly below the post as well which doesnt seem to be attached to the tuner, not sure what this one does, or if i can use this screw hole to mount the grover. I will post a pic later to show a better look at them. I have been looking online, hard to find tuners that look like these.

T,

There have been a steady stream of questions about tuning machines, so I went ahead and put together a Tuner guide, and posted it in the Misc section. Your tuners should be one of 2 types. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the great work you did on that Tuner Guide!

thanks funkle,
appreciate that. Upon closer inspection I see that my tuners are not originals, they are schaller replacement, hence the mounting screwing being inside of the post. I am going to replace them with some grover locking rotomatic since the screws are already drilled for those.

installed the grover locking rotomatic with 18:1 ratio. Gotta say they are awesome, precise tuning and stay in tune well.

I've installed Grover locking tuners for a client. I like them. Strange self-locking mechanism, but it works well once you read the instructions. Personally, I'm still biased towards Gotoh. Don't know why...yeah I do. It's the Ibanez/Gotoh legacy.

I wish Gotoh still made locking tuners, or maybe they do but nobody seems to list them. I just replaced the Chinese imitation Grovers on my AF75TD with real Gotoh imitation Grovers. Not the same mounting screw holes, but better tuners. The Gotoh imitation Grovers line up with the US Grovers. The Chinese imitation Grovers line up with the screw hole diagonal to the post like most other Gotohs. Strange. Who's copying who?
