I'm planning to buy an AF105F to mod it, transforming this humble jazzbox into a "PM105" (Petruz Metheny Custom). The photo speaks by itself. I'll simply take off the floating pickup and make a hole for a full-sized Super 58; throw out the pickguard; place two knobs; and, last but not least, shave off the horrible artcore logo, leaving the peghead luxuriously black, like Pat did on his PM20/FG100 custom.
Another nice customization would be changing the tailpiece, but it's 2:30 pm and I'm tired of playing with Photoshop...

Petruz,

I like the mods. Good luck. Please post photos of your mods and maybe even the step by step action.

Nice idea only the peg head will ahve to painted to make it black. That is a rosewood overlay on there.

That should read the headstock would have to be painted if you want it black because it has a rosewood overlay on it.

Petruz , remember , if you replace the 2 Pots (knobs) you will see the modifications and thats not a nice view.

Your Idea is great but is it worth the cash ?

Personnaly i wouldn't mod a chinese guitar....

And what is the use of the selector, with only one humbucker ?

i'm assuming the artcore customs are good guitars, just like the mid-80's japanese ibanezes were. it seems to be so, at least considering the high appraisals made by people here in this forum or reviewers on harmony central.
the second point is that, with a little fortune, one can get a real deal buying an used one, 300 euros i mean, or better. that would be a very modest starting price for the mod wich, in the end, is not so "serious" (in the sense that a luthier could do it very easily).

about the peghead, yeah, i thought it was black with the logo engraved.

hey emzc, you're wright! i was tired and missed this detail. the base for the photoshop mod was the AF105 with two humbuckers, but the AF105F does not have the selector.
here it goes.

Petruz,

There is such a nice flame to the top and back...it would be pretty cool if your project could include refinishing the guitar with a burst of some sort. Of course refinishing could open up a whole new complicated situation...but it would be cool. :-)

How about making that switch tri sound?

Indeed, the AF105F is an inspiring guitar. The much I play it, the much I love it. For its sound, not for its look. Maybe a tri sound switch will add something.

Petruz,

Now that you have cancelled this project (due to the excellent PM100 you have purchased), how about converting an AF105F with either a P90 or a Charlie Christinal pickup? :-)

Hmmm...not bad... but the thing is, I really love Sadowkys :-)
As the master luthier says, the loss of acoustic can be largely compensated by the freedom of pickup choices and reduced feedback; in the end, these are electric and not acoustic guitars.
I continue to think that AF105s are an eccellent point of departure for creative mods.

I agree. I like the idea of the Charlie Chrisian p/u (sorry for mangling the spelling above). I may have to consider that one.

My, my! Petruz, you got it right. That is a VERY good looking modification. My own thought was how much feedback I'd get from a single P-90 type pickup.

Hey garyelcrrt, i'm happy you liked it. for the moment i'm ok with my new PM100 but maybe in the future i'll found a deal and get an AF105 to try this mod. i'm sure it would rival some other ibanez "boutique" models - like the PM100.
