Thought you guys would enjoy a picture of Paul Gilbert playing an Ibanez Artist hollow body. Not sure which model this is, but it had a very flamed top. Beautiful guitar and he ripped it up. The headphones were plugged in early on, but then eventually they were on his head, unplugged. It was sooo loud, I imagine they just cut the noise a little.

This is from the Cliff Cultreri show this weekend in LA. Satch, Vai, Luke, Gilbert, Scott Henderson, Dweezil Zappa, and Johnny Hiland all came out to help Cliff.

I tried to get a good shot of the Artist for the ICW folks. It's a little blurry.

WOW! Looks like a very well-preserved 2630 Artist (circa 1979)with replaced pickups. Those models originally came with Super 80's with engraved 'flying fingers' logos. The one pictured has adjustable pole pieces. Definite replacements.

Also notice the tri-sound switch near the volume control? It splits the 'bridge' p'up, not the neck p'up as on the AS200 model that came a bit later.

I bet it sounded killer!

Here's another shot..

The whole night was amazing. Gilbert sounded great through that guitar. He had a pedal stomp box he brought out marked OCD. Not sure...

Here's more pics of the event if you are interested.

Paul responded to a message I sent him. He said those p/u's are DiMarzio PAF Classics. He refretted the guitar and rewired the switch as a coil-splitter for both p/u's (not just the neck).

"It is an AWESOME guitar. I love that thing." - Paul Gilbert

Hey Brent,

Do you know if Paul stops by the ICW? Perhaps you can let him know what a bunch of well adjusted friendly guys we are!

Cheers,

Mark

Brent:

First, great pictures! Thanks for sharing. The concert must have been something! You had 4 fantastic guitarists and 3 are current Ibanez endorsers with one previous (Luke).

I sent PG an email quite a few months ago and invited him to the board, but never heard back from him. If you still have his ear, let him know we'd REALLY LOVE to have him stop by and hang out.

Brent~ I wonder how he modded both p'ups to a single tri-switch? Years ago I installed Super 58's in my 2630 and both have leads for a tri. However, to keep it somewhat original, I only connected the tri to the bridge p'up. It has a super funky sound when engaged, but with a significant power drop that requires signal boost (Tube Screamer to the rescue!) If both pickups were joined to the tri, wouldn't the sound be REALLY thin if both pickups were in single-coil mode? Maybe the DiMarzios have more output than 58's.(?)

I bet there's some other secret to that mod...that I would love to know about.

Paul, are you out there. Inquiring Ibaneezers need to know what's up with your special 2630!

At the show, I think only a couple guys (Vai Henderson) played with their own amps. The rest were Peavey JSX's... and there were a ton of them!

How would you describe the sound of the Dimarzio paf classics as compared to super 58s etc would they cut it for jazz-blues? and dosnt he always play Ibanez, i think that 2630 is way cool, jazzz

I can't compare them to Super 58s in that guitar, as I've never heard them :-(

I can say his tone was unique even through the JSX's. Most of the other guitarists all had "Satch'ish" tone, because of the JSX amps they were using.

Here's more pictures of Gilbert at this event.

Jazz, I've used the PAF Classics in a number of guitars, and they are great for blues/jazz and anything else where a PAF would be appropriate. They have a similar timbre to the Super 58s, but they are more open, articulate and clear - better note definition in chords. The 58 may be slightly fuller in some situations, but gets muddy sometimes.

FUNKLE, do you know if the tri sound option would work with the dimarzio paf classics out of the box, or would other work need to be done, and if it would work, are the tri sounds, noticeable, thanks, jzzzz
