Asle, your recordings are very convincing for anyone who might have doubts about this jazz box.

One important tip, to make sure you get what you want for it:

SET A DECENT RESERVE.

It is possible to raise $1304.- with this guitar:

A few weeks ago a German 2355m (natural flame maple) brought in €1110.- (then $1410 now $1387.50).

I think a reserve between $1125 and $1250 is very reasonable (€900-1000).

And Jazzzbo,
That some good guitars go cheap, is because their sellers forget to set a reserve.

Asle
Protect yourself with a RESERVE, because these auctions are binding contracts!
You can loose your $1300.- guitar for $1.-

And what's that about making no payments for 3 months? Are you f...... NUTS?
NO MONEY, NO GUITAR!

The only right message for people who are low balling on this beauty is: RESERVE NOT MET!

Now, do something about it before they rip you off!

Hey Ginger,
No payment for 3 months is just a Paypal credit thing. I'd still get my money right away.
I've sold some stuff on ebay and found a no reserve auction somewhat better since it creates more interest. If I see a no reserve auction I seem to take more interest in it than with a reserve auction.
I'll give it some time anyway... thanks for advising.

Are these guys IYO serious buyers?
IMO they are low balling and just hoping that no serious bidder comes along and then they have your guitar practically for nothing.
A RESERVE gives you the time to wait for a serious bidder, who bids because he wants that guitar, not because he thinks he can rip the owner off.
Would it be so bad, that that serious bidder wouldn't come along within one week, but let's say in 6 or 12 weeks?
I guess not, as long as you get what the guitar is really worth!

And I say, selling without a RESERVE is always a risk. The RESERVE is your best possible insurance policy.

Let me put it the other way around:
If you, carrying this guitar, would meet someone in the street, telling you "I give you $100.- for your guitar" or "I give you $400.- for your guitar" what would you tell him?

.... off!

Is it bad for you, when you don't see such people low balling for your guitar on Ebay? Why?
ONE serious bid is enough!
From the guy who has the money and really wants your guitar... ONE BID!

I'm not sure what you mean by the interest thing, but just to clearify: Paypal is responsible for giving people credit, not me. I have nothing to do with the "3 months with no interest" -thing. It's just like another credit card. Everyone using Paypal can also use it. The buyer will pay interest to Paypal, not me. I will get my money right off the bat from Paypal. Just another evil way for ebay to make more money.
I'm a serious player and I've found out that I'm seeking a different sound and I am eyeballing one certain guitar that's on ebay right now. That may have something to do with why I'm eager to sell fast but I see your point of view. However, I'm not dumb enough to let my guitar go for $3-400. I don't think that any of the 100+ that is watching the auction would be either.

But THEY are not selling, YOU are!
If you don't protect your guitar with a RESERVE, and $364.- is the highest bid on the 20th of October, the guitar is legally sold for $364.-
The buyer can force you to hand it over!

This isn't a game! It's an auction! If you don't make any conditions, then there are no conditions! On the 20th of October you will have a contract with the highest bidder, no matter how low that bid will be!

Gem & Jazz.....Lets not be naive..I'm sure that Aroee knows that you can pull an auction for any reason as long as its not within 12 hours of auction end. So....if the bidding is not going as planned, somehow I think that the guitar will disappear from EBAy and reappear as a new listing-with a reserve.....

What is the use of trying what people (including low ballers) are willing to bid more than 12 hours before auction end.
Most often, this is an absolutely uninteresting phase of the auction.
Many serious bidders start bidding during those last twelve hours, often even in the last half hour, because they don't want to spend days following the "competition". Sometimes it can be amusing, but what I often see, is that in the very last minute a really serious bidder drops in out of nowhere: someone who's name was invisible for the whole week.
And sometimes this really serious bidder is totally absent. A good reason to set a reserve from the start, certainly when you need money for another guitar within a short period. A new listing takes extra time.
Now you won't know in time whether you will have enough for the new guitar.
That can be a problem, maybe not for the sultan, but for many it is.

Ginger, if you've ever sold an instrument on Ebay, you must have noticed that at least some offers from serious bidders to struck a deal outside of Ebay come in per mail. If this is what you're after (I got and sold a lot of my instruments that way) you might be better off offering without a reserve or lower limit, because of the Ebay fees, which are lowest if you start offering from 1$ upwards.
That said, there is really no reason at all to fill up this otherwise great forum with discussions like these. Whatever reason Aroee has for offering his instrument the way he does, this is really none of our business, is it? Giving some advice is certainly appreciated but there is no reason to argue against Aroees decision in that vehement way. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks, Dave.

Ginger..DAve Jacobs hit the nail on the head. Most of the serious $ happen OUTSIDE of the EBay environment as many sellers would rather the EBay funds be used to help close a sale. Listing the item merely lets the serious buyer the oppurtunity to contact the seller for a deal..I have sold MANY guitars this way and have purchased many this way also. I think this strategy is especially true of the RARE and unusual items

Someone made a wise decision:

"The seller ended this listing early because of an error in the minimum bid or reserve amount."

Alright, Asle! No low balling any more!
Don't throw the dice, if you can't pay the price!

And no, I'm not going to sit and watch how a fellow member and player gets himself ripped off.

And yes, I can be very paternalistic.
I think, we have to realise that there are some real predators out there, who are after our instruments. After two or three weeks you'll find your guitar back at some online auction at the double or triple price, like the 1982 pearl white AM205PW.
Someone bought it, changed the TP6 for a Quick Change II and added €1000.- to the price.
They are not real collectors or players, they are dealers. No more no less.

Dave_G, I'm not familiar whith these tactics.

So, when I bid $1.- I can contact the seller by e-mail with a more realistic bid, so that Ebay doesn't get more than $4.80.
But how much are we talking about when the deal is made within the Ebay auction?
I must say, I had to look it up:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html
For a $1300.- item: $4.80+$1.31+$29.25+$4.50= $39.86 (leaving $1260.14 for the seller).
That's 3.06615% of the final value, or 3.16314% of the nett profit.
Shop commissions on consignments are higher (10%).

I know, that it is not nothing, but if you make a deal outside of the Ebay environment, THE SELLER might miss that last minute record bidder, like the one who bought the German 2355m Harry, Tristan and I were bidding for: €1110.- or $1410.- a few weeks ago at a 1.27 exchange rate.

But I have no doubt that this buying tactics does work FOR THE BUYER, because you have probably the most sizeable collection of ICW.

It is an idea I've never thought of: bidding $1.- just to get someone's email address. I saw these bids merely as insulting and low balling...

But I'm always willing to learn from your vast experience. So, next time I see something really interesting I will use this new knowledge.

Thanks for the tip!

okay, I figured I'd take my time on thisone after all. This way it probably won't sell easy but it doesn't hurt to keep it for a while longer as it's really a great sounding guitar.

I think the BIN can be a good move, Asle.
You won't set a record, (because you set a maximum) but you make perfectly clear how much you want. Everyone who doesn't use the BIN option takes the risk of not acquiring this beauty. So if someone really wants it (and he can see and hear this is a good one), he'll see the necessity of striking fast.
And a fast decision means fast money!
The bidding goes far better than the first time:

Two serious bidders within one day, who know you've something special to offer. Less bids but the amounts are far better for the first day.
Now you're taken seriously. I think someone is going to hit the BIN button within 3 days.
(Keep my fingers crossed for you)

Aroee,
I watched the other day while our guys tried to convince you to do the smart thing. All that advice was well meant, we're a group on honest decent people and no poster here who behaves themselves is given BAD advice. Good to see you have protected yourself from a serious loss... I always sell with a BuyItNow and the automatic reserve a BIN price assures me.

There are freak slack periods where people don't bid - I had my eye on a lovely Gibson ES150 DCN and got it for $700.00. WHY ?? Because the auction ended 09/12/01 and I was the high bidder. Should have gone for a LOT more...

We're pulling for ya, looking at the actual bidders you got some serious eBay players bidding. Good for you !!!

You wonder what happened? The reserve was met and 700Carter raised his own bids to shake off the competition. He placed a bid of $950.- October the 22nd. Yesterday the 23rd nothing happened. So it was sold for $950.-
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250039754912

I think that is on the low side for a real "Lawsuit" that has proven its quality with two magnificent sound samples.
I think this guitar would have reached a higher level, if Asle hadn't placed a price ceiling, because that's what a BIN price actually is.
I think a price between $1100 and $1350 would have been possible without that BIN. But Asle was a bit in a hurry. His thoughts are with that other guitar he wants. A BIN at 1250 would have ended the auction sooner. But it didn't work out the way he hoped.

So Jazzz, now you know exactly what you should and shouldn't do:
You should place a hidden price floor (RESERVE), NOT a public price ceiling (BIN)!

After this one I would wait about 3-4 weeks, Jazzz.
I think until the end of November/ beginning of December, so that the guitar will lay under some Christmas tree in time.
From now to Christmas there are only two paydays left.
January is structurally bad. People are recovering from their December and Sylvester expenses then.

That one is like my 2355m, but then the 2616 Artist version. Extras compared to the normal 2355M: Artist headstock, Star inlays, luxury binding, star tuners, gold hardware and logo pickups.
So we are talking not one level but two levels higher than the normal 2355 sunburst.
Mine is in between.
