I'm looking at changing the frets on my 95 AS120 to flater heavy wire. An old 74 Alverez Yari Signature spoiled me, and I make this change on all my KEEPERS so to speak. How will this affect the neck binding? Anyone had good or bad experiences? Additionally, if I run the pickups naked will it change the sound of them. They are Cort 58's. Mike

Hi Mike,
1)
Removing frets from a bound fretboard is never without risk. It has to be done very carefully. The same goes for hammering new frets in. Especially when it has been refretted before there can be glue between the binding and the fret end, which can cause damage to the binding when you remove the frets. Every removal makes the slots a littel wider, and can make it necessary to use glue for the new frets.
It all depends on the craftsmanship of your luthier.
2)
Running your Super 58's naked will change the sound of them. Why should you do that? YOUR Super 58's have been wax potted in the covers. If you unsolder the covers, you ruin the wax. I thought you were satisfied about you pickups. There's a saying "never change a winning team"...
Same goes for pickups.
Don't "repair" what's not broken (yet)!

3)
You like Yairi? If got a Bozo B100 of his hand. I read Bozo Padunovaç broke his first prototype in two, because he was "not satisfied". Can you believe that? Breaking a solid rosewood guitar? That Serbian hot-head!
I must say these Japanese Bozo guitars have all a strange kink at the 14th fret (neck insert), which has no effect on the sound or playability. My 12-string Japanese Bozo has the same bend.
How does the fret board of your Yairi look at the 14th fret?

IT's perfect. Not lifting bends etc. Yea your right about the pickups. THanks for toning me down on that one. I used my Yari all through college and it was played about 3 hours a day or longer and it held up well. I have the CY 125 still left and no neck problems there either. Had a lot of loose rib problems however, and the bridge popped off one time. (we have a lot of moister issues here in FLorida) It was Ez repaired back then as Mike Tobias was just kicking off at this shop in Orlando. He was a great help and wealth of knowledge. I hear his bass guitars really took off. I remember him showing me a prototype and saying someday his bass guitars would be high above all others with the sealed hollow body. He did know his Ibanez and other guitars though. He would removed the lifted fingerboard on the guitars you are talking about and reset them or replace the fingerboard entirely. Sounds like you have quite a quiver of guitars GInger. MIke

Yeah, I always bought easier than I sold.
After I sold 11 of them, I stopped because I could feel the market holding its breath after 9/11/2001. It has been a bad selling period for a couple of years. Lots of music shops closed down over the past 5 years. But during the last two years the market has regained some trust.
I stayed out of music shops for a few years as much a possible, just to protect myself, because I'll always be an adict.

I saw at least two on Ebay. One 1994 Artstar that didn't sell last night at $999.- (higher reserve) and the 1980 "Pleked" Artist at $1099.- which will go in about 11 hours from now.
