Guitar, from an engineering perspective.

No, I am not a tone freak. I try to do the same thing as that site, demystify things. I try to find out how a(n) (e)guitar really works and to shoot down ducks (beliefs that are not based on facts). Opinions of tone or other properties of a guitar are a different thing but there seems to be much based on beliefs also among them.

Fascinating, Nigel... but now my brain hurts, from puzzling over the obvious.

I may have to come back for parts 3, 4 & 5... later.

Thanks for the link. Very interesting stuff. It is very well written. I haven't made it through part IV, yet.

I bet engineers wish we all had oscilloscopes, instead of ears. :-)

I bet engineers with oscilloscopes can show you hear something you expect to hear beacause of your beliefs. If a guitar, pickup, amp etc has a good reputation among your friends or other interest group, your ears may be not very good to judge.

Which beliefs do you imagine I have? I cannot work with this suggestion without further explanation.

To your second point:
My subjective valuing of a guitar system is not dependent on others' opinions. They may influence my decision making process with regard to which products I choose to experiment with, but other's taste does not justify me concluding on an item's aspects or value.

Believing is accepting an explanation of that which is unknowable through demonstrable experience. I might accept a suggestion from one about a product's resulting tone, but until I've heard it, I just don't know.

So, what guitars do you own, and what music do you play?
