At a close second is a '84 custom order BC Rich Warlock,a one of a kind relic from my metal days.Now stop laughing....with Dimarzio megadrives in the neck and middle,a X2N in the bridge and 7 mini toggles worth of tone options,it's a must have in the studio.It's amazing what you can get out of this thing.   Guitartim Username: Guitartim Registered: 04-2001 Posted on Monday, June 12, 2006 - 5:22 pm:    Interesting! My favorite WAS my Gibson '57 Historic Reissue Custom Black Beauty. I used to call her "That Heavy Bitch"...very affectionately, of course. She got the best overall tones of any guitar I've ever owned. It's a Carvin HF2 Fatboy (Holdsworth signature model) Fully hollow mahogany body and neck with a flamed Koa top. The bich is my fave model but unfortuantly my recent dealings with bc rich has made me lose the respect I had for them and will only buy one more thats on the wish list, which by the way for anyone? is an 80's bich or warlock??? Anyone heard of John Price guitars? You indicated that the pickups need help...can you give some more details?   Funkle Username: Funkle Registered: 12-2001 Posted on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 - 11:39 am:    Agr, Some people really like Carvin pickups, but to me, they are usually too bright - voiced more like single coils (without the sweetness). The Holdsworth signature pickups are particularly harsh. They produce a lot of the warble you get from an overly strong magnet. Allan Holdsworth uses brightly voiced pickups, and turns the treble way down on his amps, so they probably work well for his unique approach. Unplugged, the guitar sounds like a full hollow archtop, only with less output, and more compressed. I suspect it is a tone monster just waiting to be liberated. It has a tone that I've heard described as a "bellow", almost like a tenor sax. I am going to try SD Custom Custom, and Custom 5 pickups in the bridge position, my personal favorites. You can get a pretty decent modern jazz tone out of the neck pickup. A warmer pickup would help here too. My SC1620, which was the pinnacle of playability until the Fatboy showed up. I have to admit, I'm able to play faster and more cleanly on the Carvin. The neck is a full D with a large radius. It is great if you have larger hands. my hands are pretty average for a 6 footer, and it is perfect for me. Ccs, Anderson really does a good job with their necks - beautifully rounded fret ends. They are great players, and beautiful to behold as well. Just about perfection in my book, but they are a little pricey at $2,000-3,000+. There are a few other builders making similar guitars in LA - Suhr and Tyler for instance. It seems that these are the guitars of choice for the top LA session guys, Mike Landau, Scott Henderson etc.   Funkle Username: Funkle Registered: 12-2001 Posted on Wednesday, June 14, 2006 - 4:37 pm:    I just dropped a SD Custom Custom into the bridge position of the Fatboy, and all I have to say is Before the guitar was harsh and undefined, now it is clear and resonant. It loves overdrive. On cleaner settings, the bridge position is a tad twangy. With the crunch channel on the VHT it starts to really sing. And it gets a really pure sound from the lead channel, and it stays pure even when you push it. Funkle, I've always been curious about Carvin's Fatboy. The pickups were supposedly co-designed by Holdsworth. Your's looks incredible and with the p'up swap, probably sounds killer. Because of him I decided that I just had to learn how to play the guitar. I'm from a musical family, but the guitar wasn't considered a "real" instrument & so I had to do it all myself if I wanted to learn anything. I got an old Silvertone F-hole for $20 & started to learn the basics. By '72 I was proficient enough that my guitar mentor/bro & I decided that we should get together an act, & take it out & try to do something with it. I decided that I needed to get a really good instrument, and so I started looking for one. I happened to find this old luthier who had a collection of fine old guitars stashed away in his shop. My buddy & I somehow talked him into showing us what he had. One by one he pulled out his collection of old archtops, & let us check them out. The instant I held a 1938 Epiphone Broadway, & started playing it, I knew that it was the one I wanted. After 35 years it still is. Cost me $350 on layaway, which was a lot of money to me in 1972. When I finally paid it off & took it home, I played it 12 hours a day for the next month. Over the years it's gotten a vintage Johnny Smith humbucker added, but otherwise it's exactly the same as when I got it & it's still the best axe I've ever played. Local pawn shop. The serial number says it was made between 84-86. I think Fender USA was in dire straits at the time and the Japanese factory was really cranking out fabulous guitars. This one is a gem. System one trem really surprized me. It rocks and stays in tune really well. I added Lace sensor on top and a Duncan in the bridge. I have a '64 345 (acquired from the original owner, and refretted for me by the late Jimmy D'Aquisto back when he was unknown), a '64 SG Standard, a 64' Firebird III (original owner from when I was 13, also later refretted for me by D'Aquisto), and two execeptionally rare '94 Custom Shop Robben Ford Ultras (orignal owner) and they all smoke...they play themselves actually. I'm fortunate to have any one of these monsters... (But my '82 or '83 AR-300, -305, -500 are right up there with 'em...so's my '81 AS-200, and '04 Ibanez Sco'. There's not that much of a difference between the Gibson and Ibanez solid bodies (hear that everybody?). But the semi-hollows each have their own respective personalitties and they're all superlative. Sorry no photos (I'm new here and don't know how to do that technical stuff yet....). I used to own a '56 Tele that I rescued from a pawn shop, in 1970. After I sanded off the blue spray paint, I dug out the neck PU cavity, big enough to get one of them Gibby 'thumbsucker' PUs in it. Then, I finished it clear, with 3 coats of fiberglass resin. She was heavier than $#!+, but boy, did she sing! Had to sell her in '76, to buy an acoustic, for another band. Wish I'd at least saved some pix. Allears, Sounds like a nice collection, but I agree with Chaz... The tele copy is from somewhere in between 1987 and 1996. I got it because it's ALMOST like the one I owned back in 1984. But that one had a Fender-style headstock. The strat copy has been mine since buying it new in 1985. (I traded the tele, dang it!) I used this strat on recordings my band made back in 1985-86. Holmis63   Chucke99 Username: Chucke99 Registered: 2-2007 Posted on Thursday, November 01, 2007 - 1:14 pm:    Hands down, at the moment, for my favorite non-Ibby is my modded mid-1970's Greco Cherry Sunburst LP Custom, set neck, bound frets,tricked out to approach Frank Zappa's guitar from the late 1970's, the one he used on his Shut Up N Play Yer Guitar albums. It has Ibanez velve-tune tuners, a brass nut, and a Kent Armstrong pup in the neck position and a Carvin M-22 SD in the bridge position. Both have tri-sound switches for full humbucker, parallel, and single coil modes. -Chuck
