First off, I have never built a tube amp from a kit. But I can offer second-hand info.

I know what I've heard from my amp tech. He sells Hoffman board kits and designs his own line of amps. He says that the Ted Weber kits are inexpensive and very popular. He also says he's gotten calls from people having problems with these Weber kits due to the mediocre quality of some of the components. What I've read on discussion boards support this quality issue theory. My amp guy tells me that his kits are far better but more expensive - only top of the line components. I know he knows his stuff and I believe him.

If you're interested, his site is

Hatcher Amps

Just so you know I'm not pushing anyone's products, there are other manufacturers selling Hoffman kits and they're all listed on the Hoffman website. I recommend you investigate as many of these kit suppliers as you can.

I've thought of building one of their kits.

They offer a 5w and an 18w valve amp, the 5w is a single ended, class A design using an EL84, and the 18w amp is a push-pull design (AB?) using 2 EL84's. The instructions are posted online.

They're a UK based company, but they do export.
