I just felt the need to stir things up a bit, after semi botching up a transaction with another member & his wife.

How many of you hide purchases, sales, instruments, parts, etc. from your wives or 'significant others'?

I know I do!

There have GOT to be some GREAT stories out there... Let's hear 'em!

HUMMMMMMMM, Where dO I start ?

Actually my wife is VERY tolerent..she does not share my passion for guitar collecting, but she tolerates it-guess its better than collecting mistresses !

I worked out a deal with her around 10 years ago that gave me unrestructed purchasing power with the promise that , when I turned 50, I would not own more than 50 guitars. Sooooooo I got three years to reduce my collection to a manageable size.\

The only problem is that I own way more than 50 "Keepers"

Perhaps I should shop a new Wife ?

Seriously, my kids are almost at college age and -as it turns out-vintage guitars was the absolute best investment to help defray the costs of an Ivy league education for one and mucho post grad education for the other(except for Jones Soda Company !) and it kept me off the streets for the last 15 years or so..

LOL ..... My wife bought me my AR2000 for Xmas a couple of years ago, she got me a Boss BR1600 for my birthday. My Missus has never said "no" to any of my guitars, but then I've only got about 30 of them.
Did I mention just how big her jewellery box is?

Psychologically interesting. In fact it is about yealousy... does your wife feel neglected, is she afraid not to be in first place...

But I think that I have a solution for Dave's problem, because he made a "promise that , when I turned 50, I would not OWN more than 50 guitars".

First you create a legal persona, which can be an inc. or a foundation or whatever...

Let's call it the Dave_G stringed instrument museum. Then you "sell" your keepers to the "museum" and "lease" them back.

Promise legally fulfilled.

This is a great subject! Recently, since I found this site, I've become fascinated with the collector mentality. I suspect this has been written about before, but I haven't done any research on it yet.

The hiding it from the spouse thing seems to be about a need for private space -- i.e., for some independence. I don't know; what do you think?

I really enjoy talking to you folks about your collections and listening as you display awesome amounts of knowledge on all things Ibanez. However, I'm no collector. I just don't feel that need, so I'm kind of an outsider looking in.

Over the years, I've found that this collecting urge is not about wealth (although clearly folks with the means can collect more expensive things). It also doesn't seem to be about proficiency in actually using the items (though that helps), as the really major collectors get their joy from posession.

I'm looking forward to hearing what you guys have to say.

Ginger, It really has nothing to do with feeling neglected or anything like that. Simply put, a collection of several hundred vintage guitars is HARD WORK ! Seriously, it takes an incredible amount of time maintaining this large collection, not to mention the amount of space the guitars and associated stuff takes up (I have a cabinet that is 6 feet long & 4 feet high with 144 draws full of replacement parts ). I am luck enough to have an understanding boss who allows me to use some of the companies storage space for many of the guitars...

Does that mean Dave has to wear one of those "G Stinged" things in his own museum?

Hey Guys,
I'll explain my situtation. My wife will come into my studio and say "where did that come from!!!" I'd say "this old thing?" I've had this one for years. I hover around 16 guitars. Usually I'll have to sell a few to aquire different models. I don't few myself as a collector though. I have just enough to appreciate each instruments personality. I've always loved Ibanez guitars since I was a kid. I do own other brands that I enjoy to. I seem to get more out of playing my Ibanez guitars though especially my AR500. I played it for 3 hours last night. It rips!
Peace!

My wife just doesn't get it. She says that every guitar looks the same. Now, don't get me wrong, she is intelligent, but she does not understand. I guess I don't really care about purses or shoes, drapes or jewelery either. So it is a give and take. Let's just say that my wife said no when I told her I was hanging guitar hangers in the living room. (I wanted to do like in the board room at Hoshino):-)

Oh well.

I've never been married, but a few girlfriends have commented on my proclivity towards accumulating axes, & they are no longer around. Hey...women are everywhere, but a really good guitar is hard to find. Present ladyfriend (7 years) thinks it's great, but she is also a musician & we just got her a $3000 Bouffett (?) clarinet...so I'm good for another dozen guitars, at least.

She's happy as a clam at the moment 'cause I'm selling them off. I'll be down to 4 guitars by the end of the week. My last Roadstar just hit reserve on eBay. I may not own an Ibanez by the end of June.

I'm struggling to find a job and our band is playing regularly so I'm focused on "must have" gear only right now. It's kind of liberating actually.

I still got the DT250 and DT200. The DT200 is going to the kid down the street. I'll hang onto the DT250 as long as I can. Sold my EXB404 bass to a bandmate.

Looks like the RG420CI might bring some good cash:

Ebay Item #320117762848

On a positive note, I just received word from my brother that a long wait is finally over. Long story short, he is in at the ground floor on a pro recording studio here in Portland. He'll be the house engineer. If things go well, I'll be able to get some work outta there as assistant AE and maybe some producer gigs. Not to mention the cheap studio time for my band

Back on-topic, my wife has always been cool with my guitar habit. The PA gear in the living room is another story...

Welp, I just bought a realy nice AS80 on Ebay and I've had it sitting on a stand in front of my amps ever since when I'm not playing it RIGHT in front of her and until she notices I'm not saying a word. It kind of an ongoing thing we have about her being so unobserving of things so I figured I may buy guitars till she notices. Only problem is I'm filling up the corners of the room with cases. One way I was successful though was in timing. See I just justified a guitar by getting it at a time when I could say it was a combined gift for fathers day, my birthday and our anniversary.....WAAAAA LA....problem solved.

My GAS is relentless. Therefore, I will always be planning the next acquisition. Right now it's PA gear. The wife sings with the band so there's no issues.

However, I do have my sights set on a new flavour of guitar. Hmm... Not sure I should mention this here. Lemme just say they are Japanese made and leave it at that.

How does the wife figure into this mess? When I spot a likely candidate I ask her what she thinks of the color...

Dave in all honesty why do you have such a collection of guitars and parts. Is it an obsession or are you trying to collect all vintage parts you can- so many will have to buy from you and you can charge customes excessive amounts of money for a 1$ item?In other words corner the market and become a guitar mogul??Im having a hard time connecting the dots....

Fingers-You don't get it at ALL....I have never charged anyone anything for any parts (well maby couple of pickups here and there) Most of the extra vintage parts I have donated to other members of the forum (feel free to chime in) to help restore some of these vintage gems. Of course, I need many parts just to keep my collection looking good and authentic too. Believe it or not, its not about $.....I am very , very fortunate to be able to afford my hobby, not trying to be anything, I just really dig vintage guitars and will support anyone else with similar likes to the best of my ability.

This concept is very hard for most to understand, especially in the days of $20 knobs and $150 bridges...it just makes me want to puke when I see the parts jackels tear apart a perfectly good guitar to sell it in parts to make a few extra $. Its pathetic to destroy a 25+ year old piece of art to make a couple of hundred $...its ridiculous.....I'd much prefer to see an avid collector resurrect one of these beauties and I have restored dozens of Ibanez classics and donated parts for many many more.

You helped me a lot, Dave. Since I know that there's you with a collection 9 or 10 times as large as mine, I feel a bit more free to speak about it, although there's always some fear after one break-in 10 years ago. (They only took my brand new computer, my fax machine, the VCR and a money box and left my collections alone.) I guess I'll always stay suspicious.

my wife is smart enough and my collection is (still) quite numerable, so new acquisitions counts visually ( )

So no way to hide, and every time I have to confess I start with the following words: īHoney, I' ve got some sweeeet pair of fancy manolo blahniks (jmmy choo) andsoon for a bargain price'-
and she will understand immediately. Hunters and collectors respects each other. No questions. Some sort of passion sharing.

Hi there, everyone... Every time I buy new gadgets on ebay or wherever I have the item shipped to my office. Everyone seems to agree when I tell them itīs due to the "wife factor". My collection is not that big, but it covers guitars and amps from a couple of hundred dollars to a PRS Santana 2 and a TwoRock CR Signature, so if she knew how much money that was tied up in guitar-related equipment she would really freak out, I guess. Most of my guitars are Ibanezīs though, at quite reasonable value even if the prices are rising. But that also have itīs benefits. I now can seduce myself into the idea of it all being about investments (itīs not, but it sounds good). So instead of putting money in the bank or save for my pension, I buy nice guitars. As an investment... Right? (No, not really!) Fortunate I have my own boys-room, wich my wife seldom enter, so she havenīt been counting stash lately (thank God)!!! I am sitting there right now, surfing the ICW, listening to some nice guitar solos on iTunes, surounded by all my stash...and itīs getting late!(norwegian time) Iīm off!

It's so funny-- humans...we are all basically the same...I've tried just about everything mentioned already...could be a funny episode in Seinfeld (RIP). "Hiding the axe".

The Dude- can totally relate. My wife came out of the Salon one time and I was sititng right in front of the store, in HER car, and she looked right at me, looked left then right, and proceeded to walk by the car and into the parking lot looking for me. I just sat there laughing my tukus off!

So I figured it out then, I wouldn't have to sweat it near as much.

It also helps to stash a few in Moms mini castle a few miles down the road in one of the spare rooms. Ahhh, you can always count on good ol' Mom! (no one here has ever used that one?!)

One more thing...I too have benefited from Dave G's generosity, more than once. Fingers is obviosuly way, way off, and should try and get to know someone before making an absurd comment.

From my understanding of it, while most were selling their gems in the same era we bought them, Dave kept em and added many more over the years. And he restored a good many of them, and collected parts along the way, a natural by-product. And he has shared free of cost more than anyone else on ICW, and has had a direct hand in restoring ALLOT of ICW members gems. He is definitely one rare cat where it's not so much about the $$ at all, evidenced by many here and even more threads on ICW.

He hardly needs defending, but He is a guitar God in my book! So kneel!! (ok, enuf tukus kissin...)

My girl knew i was a guitar player from the get go. All the friends she hung out with told her about me, since i played with most of them in bands and share riffs with them. So she knew guitars came with this package.

I recently got the 2670re, i bought her some stuff and cleared some debt a month before the "im buying a 2670re" conversation was introduced to her.

She lets me have my freedom and get what i want, but she would not tolerate a huge collection since we live in an apartment. So a collection of over 6 guitars is too much.

A week after I promised "no more guitars for a while" my Greco LP showed up. I tried to explain that this was a "parts" guitar, so not technically a "guitar" in the strict definition. She just told me she didn't believe me a week earlier when I had said "no more" and expected another to show up. Now I'm in the hunt for one of my "holy grails" and like Zenday, I've been clearing the decks by selling some other guitars, paying bills, etc. because if I get the chance to pull the trigger on a grail, I'm doing it come H-e-c-k or high water.

I avoided this thread long enough. I guess it's time to come clean. My wife is fantastic about my guitar collecting. But it's been over 27 years in the making. For the first part of our marriage I only had one guitar: a Pennco acoustic. Then in '88, I got some money, decided to get back into the electric and bought a second hand '82 Westbury Custom Deluxe...$250.00 for a very cool guitar in excellent shape. Years later the goofy 6-position switch went and my hunt for a replacement took me into researching Japanese made guitars, an introduction to Michael Wright and then back to my pre-marriage affair with Ibanez guitars. Talk about coming full circle.

By then my business was successful, disposable cash was available and the wife was getting the things she wanted. When I told her I wanted to get more involved with collecting Ibanez guitars, she thought it was a cool hobby. We discussed the parameters of how much money was cool to spend without her knowledge or how important some guitars were as investments (she always looks at the bottom line $$$$-wise). I've tried to keep my harem full of top-o-the-line models in such good shape that selling if necessary would not be a problem. She understands that concept.

In recent years, she has been directly responsible for me attaining some of the prizes in my collection: Artfield AFD5CTTB-Z, 2670RE, AR5000RE. Like I said, she's fantastic! :-)

My moral: Don't lie and hide things. It's counter productive to developing a beautiful long-time relationship. Take care of your spouse, look out for their interests and they'll do the same for you. Guitars and other material possessions are nothing compared to the feeling of knowing you have a spouse that will always love and take care of you, no matter what you possess.

My wife went with me to purchase the 2700BK from Dave_g. She's the one who snapped the picture of Dave, me, and the two 2700s that is up on the other thread. In fact, I think I recall her saying at the time, "That blond one is nice too. Are you sure you don't want to just get them both while we're here?"

I think that says it all. She's as insane as the rest of us...

Hi all!

My girlfriend is fantastic! When I met her she didnīt know about guitars. Because of my obsession/hobby she now goes: "Hey, that guy is playing an SG" or "I know that bass: itīs a Precision".
The house we live in is full of guitars: they just about hang everywhere, exept for the bathroom and our bedroom and I often ask her if sheīs not getting tired of it. After all, she has to live in it too. But she always replies: "I love the way we have decorated our house, itīs unique; who owns a house that has the walls filled with guitars?".
For those whoīd like to know about the money that can/can not be spent: we both work and we have one account together in which we both contribute money for the costs of living and the rest of our salary goes to our personal accounts. Weīre both free to do whatever we like with that "pocket money". Itīs a nice construction and it never leads to arguments about how and on what money is spent. Although I realise it only works when both partners have an income.

In the end I donīt know about the guitars, but my girlfriend is definitely a keeper!

Kind greetz,
Harry

My wife is understanding to a point. Her opinion is that things like the four kids we have, food and other necessary things come first. After that.... what we have left over is for our interests. Her's is shoes, clothes and beauty supplies, Mine is guitar and related GAS attack spending! I can wear the same tennis shoes every day and not care, but when I look at my music room... I am a happy camper! myguitars

My "wife" is on fire to hang my mistresses on the living room wall. And i canīt be happier in that way about her!

I donīt have that big collection cause i want to be able to play them some time each. But itīs becoming to big to our home soon, the cases is the problem! All of them is carefully sorted out and i love them all!

The ar500 rips and the strat is just incredible!

Tonight iīm playing the lead II and itīs an incredible and forgotten Fender model. Fun to have those vintage axez to hang on the shoulder and play around!

That was just a dream when i was a teenager and later when study, but now i can enjoy the dream and why wouldīnt i do that? I just live one time and no wife is going to stop me!

So, freak, that picture reminds me of one of the funniest scenes from "Stripes."

"Call me Frances... I'll kill ya'...
... touch my stuff.... I'll kill ya'"

I remember that. I think they called him pysco. I was actually trying to get her to pose for a CD cover like photo. This is old from 2000.
