OK, help me out of my ignorance. Is it "eye-bah-nez" or "eee-bah-nez" or some other variant? What's the concensus?

I say aye to "eye-bah-nez". Although, when I say it it sounds more like "eye-beh-nez."

After thinking about it for a second, it kinda seems as though saying it quickly produces "eye-buh-nez." ;)

You want a good laugh? Try this one-
ee-bah-nyeth
Look in the dictionary or encyclopedia, as in Vicente Blasco Ibanez,(with a tilde over the n). 1867-1928, Spanish Novelist.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot-Vicente is pronounced vee-then-teh. No kidding.
I always pronounced it aye-buh-nez, because, can you imagine the funny looks that would follow if it were pronounced the right way?

As everyone is probably aware of Ibanez is a spanish name....
and showing it to a person with the same surname says it is pronounced ee-bah-nyez (or nyeth depending on what dialect of spanish you thpeak.)
But I am from Australia and we pronounce some words differently to you guys. eg. dynasty in America is pronounced die nasty but in Australia is din asty (which is the correct way as it is a Greek word .. and greeks dont have die in their language ..) I pronounce ibanez eye-buh-nez as well... (I wonder what the japanese say?)

Dear Sirs,

I have been a guitar player for more than 15 years now, and until recently I have stuck to my Fender Strat which I bought then.
A week ago I saw, tried out and immediately purchased an Ibanez guitar.
I was very impressed by the ease of playing it and the power of the pickups....
However, I have never used a Floyd Rose type tremolo and what happened to me yesterday at a gig was that my guitar kept going out of tune...in the end I had to unblock the strings and not use the tremolo in order to play.
The guitar would go out of tune shortly after I blocked the strings and retuned it at the bridge and without pulling on the tremolo arm.
I don't think there is anything wrong with the guitar, I just think I'm doing something wrong.
Also, I don't know exactly what model guitar I have.
I think it is a RG470 but I am not sure.
The serial number is F602678 and it is of yellow colour...
can you help me?

Go to www.ibanez.com and match your guitar to the pictures they provide.

Have any of you guys been reading the thread over at the jazz guitar news group entitled "How do you pronounce "Ibanez"? ". Check it out at:

Funkle:

Thanks for the link to the news group. I never knew it existed! I've bookmarked it for regular perusal. :)

Other threads that interested me were those about this year's 20th Century Guitar show in Long Island, NY. I'm truly upset that I missed it! A friend told me about it on the Sat. of the show and I couldn't go on Sun.

It looks like I missed meeting some great guys! Maybe they'll be around for the Philly show.

John,

It's a pretty useful newsgroup, with regular contributors like Jimmy Bruno. Do a keyword search on "Ibanez" and you'll find some interesting discussions, including one about the ICW forum!

If you were from the south, would you say "ah-buh-neiz"? I'm actually from Cali. Everybody here says "eye-bah-nez".
