I'm looking at this guitar for purchase and I don't know much about Gibsons. I've had a couple Ibanez guitars and the people here have been extremely helpful so I'm asking for help at this site. The photo is very shotty and should have some better photos very soon. The owner told me that it has NO scratches, dents etc, that the electronics are very clean and that it has Bill Lawrence pick ups. Are these original? Ballpark value? Additional details to pay attention to?

Mortatort, gibson L6s'are very underrated and because of this they sell for very low prices. They aren't great guitars in my opinion but if you like it go for it.How much does he want for it? The market value is approx $650-$1000 depending on cond.

I really think the Bill Lawrence pickups are suspect. it's possible he designed them but there couldn't be stock Bill Lawrence pups on a '74 Gibson.

He's starting out at $800. Any idea how I can determine if they ARE Bill Lawrence?

Take the pickups out of the guitar and look for a label on the bottom of the pups.

Looks like the deluxe only came with a rosewood fingerboard. this one is maple. which makes it a midnight special

the pickups in that guitar are gibson super humbuckings and along with the 6 way rotary switch were designed by Bill Lawrence.

Thanks for your help -Kid! He's had it up for a while so he might drop the $$$. Wonder how it will sound through the '76 Fender Twin that I'll be picking up from the shop tomorrow.

Kid, I your nutz..That guitar is NOT worth $700..its the low end model..bolt neck. If you sniff around long enough you should be able to find one of the original Customs L6s's with a set neck and the real Lawrence pups...(look for the white epoxy that completely covers the back of the pup). The earlier L6's are AMAZING guitars and the later ones (like the string thru with the plastic pups are kinda like a reissue and just not as good (IMHO)) I know that Bill L designed and spec'd the original guitar (the whole guitar not just the pups) but was very disappointed when Gibson made it look like just another LP copy (the original design was cosmetically quite different) as was part of the reason why he left Gibson.
Don't listen to anyone regarding these guitars, you HAVE to play one the L^s CUSTOM is one of the most versitile and fun to play guitars I own (and I have a bunch of 'em)...

Dave- I've done some more research and found that the midnight special is only bringing $350 tops. The seller is trying to get one over on me or somebody acting impulsively. I like the looks of the guitar. What would you say is the average price for the 3 L-6 models? Custom, Deluxe, and Midnight? And do you have one to sell?

I emailed the seller of the L-6 and provided the info that I found on distinguishing the 3 variations of L-6s. He said I was crazy and that I would NEVER find another one at that price!! Some people. Pity because it's a pretty guitar. Here's the link since I'm not interested in the guitar anymore.
