What are the real (in terms of specs) differences among the many numbers? There are 70's, 77's, 80's, and 58's, as far as I know. They sure sound the same to me. When you think about identical guitars being made at the same place with just different names on the headstock, I think it makes sense. To add to your study of the variety of Ibanez pickups, I would generalize and say that the Super 58 pickups have more output and drive than the Super 70s. Super 80s were ceramic magnets and wound hotter Original Super 58s had Alnico 3 magnets New Super 58s may be Alnico 5, but I'm not sure.   Fox Username: Fox Registered: 2-2003 Posted on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 12:47 pm:    Some time ago mr.Steve Rowley (accompanied by yours truly.. )made a list of Ibby pickups (They were mainly made by Nisshin Onpa Seisakusho, at least so the story goes.. and as a well-known manufacturer, of course they wound pickups for other brands too.. Short summary here.. "Logo PUs" from 1974 7,85 kO AlNiCo 8 Super70 1976-7,9-8 Super80 75-76 - 7,9 - ceramic,potted (Flying Fingers) Singlecoil version in AR112 Super58 1980 - DC ohms unavailable - AlNiCo 5 Super88 1978- 7,7 to 8,05- ceramic? -plastic covers, unadjustable polepieces Super77 like former, less power. Those new Super58s are wax potted, and we could not obtain info 'bout magnets.. V2 pickup was the first joint-venture with Larry DiMarzio, being a Super Distortion clone, while IBZ-DiMarzio sported 3 ceramic magnets.. V2s were supposedly still made by Nisshin Onpa (also known as "Maxxon") and those debuted 1978, while IBZs are believed to be DiMarzio made, these are from 1984.   Talajuha Username: Talajuha Registered: 11-2006 Posted on Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - 3:10 pm:    Wombat (ICW member) had asked Hoshino about Super 58/AS120 and Super 58 Custom/AS103 and got answer: "The factories which manufactured Super58 pickups are changed with time to time, however the basic specification of this pickup does not change. Therefore, the Super58s installed in present ARTCORE CUSTOMs are also using alnico magnet(alnico 3)." They're high output with a warm compressed sound. I would characterise them as a rich sounding pickup with some top end clarity, but very thick and congested in the midrange and bottom end. They work well for a fat jazz sound and are great driving a Marshall or similar into classic rock overdrive. I wouldn't call them 'clean'.
