Does it have anything to do with the "Ads by Google"? That seems to be slowing my system way down.

It seems like the "NEW!" splat graphic hangs the entire page while it loads.

Maybe we could drop the resolution on the image?

I noticed it too. It's still loading while I am about to finish my message.

Its not that bad here. I can tolerate it if it helps ICW stay alive.

To all:

We are experimenting with various options to help support the site. To properly evaluate the results of these experiments, I need some specific info.

What exactly do you mean by "NEW! splat graphic"? What page is it on? What position on the page?

Does the ICW content load before the ads are finished, so that you can read messages quickly?

Is anybody using a dial-up internet connection?

John -

The splat graphic I was referring to is:

new

It's the one that displays when there is a new posting in a thread.

John -

To the rest of your questions:

I'm using a cable modem at a claimed 15M download speed although I measure it at 8M+.

I have a 2.8G processor and 2G RAM.

I'm using MicroSoft IE v7 with caching refresh set to "automatic".

As far as load sequence goes, it depends.

If there is an animated ad at the top of the page, the animation has to finish one pass before the rest of the page starts to load.

So, lag time is dependent upon the length of the animation.

There are, of course, slow times and normal times.

In either case, the non-graphic portion of the ICW contents loads fairly quickly but then hangs waiting for the "NEW!" graphic to load, which can take 5-10 seconds at times.

These are just my observations.

Thanks,

- Pete

Peter:

I see where the problem you are experiencing is. It's on the Topics listing page for each section. It appears to be some interaction between the eBay ads and the "New" graphic. That's a piece of clipart, so I don't understand what the connection is between the two. We'll look into it, but I can't promise anything. My IT/web guy is on vacation for a week.

Anyway, have you tried using the "Last Day" and "Last Week" search selections under "Discussion"? They load a lot faster and you can see all new messages left within those two time-frames.

John -

It may be load dependent.

If I get on later in the evening/early morning EST, I never have any problems.

If I get on during daytime or early evening EST, then things start slowing down.

I think it's the penalty for being successful and having 5000 users.

Are you running separate web server software and app server software where the web server handles the graphics?

Or, is your app server handling everything?

Thanks,

- Pete
