Okay it's not so much a repair, but I snapped the top of one the TRC srews on my '78 IC400, and was wondering if anyone can offer me a method of retrieving the rest of the screw so I can replace it? There is no screw protruding at all, it's all buried. I wouldn't be so bothered, except the TRC now rattles which is annoying when practicing unplugged. Any ideas?

Cheers

I'd be shopping for really thin needle nose pliars. I'm sure you can find a tool at the store that is thin enough to get in there, while being minimally invasive.

How the heck does that happen anyway?

I have had the same with pickguard mounting bracket screw. I drilled out some wood around the screw with a hollow drill and removed the screw end with a good pair of pliers. The hole was filled with woodpaste (probably not the correct word, but I don't know a better word in English) and touched up with nailpolish. It is completely invisible.
After the repair i drilled a new hole for the replacement screw and mounted the pickguard. The old hole is completely covered by the mounting bracket.
A bit of patience and good tools will do the trick.

Sears/Craftsman make a set of bits designed to grip stripped or broken screw heads, allowing you to unscrew them. Don't know if they make one small enough, though.
