I must have made a deal with the devil: Got my first hole-in-one last Friday, )...broke arm in 5 places on Tuesday...game done!
I'll be starting over sometime around X-Mas.

Hmm, suggestions.... maybe fill in some holes in your music knowledge (history, theory, etc). Learn to play a lefty... or just shop alot on ebay...
one handed typing is no fun... dragon naturally speaking might be your friend. |

Brent & CC, thanx for the concern and perspective. You'd think the pain would subside a bit during the 5 days I've had this...more oxy please!
Brent, great ideas, I just wish that I read music...not a well trained musician...an ear player mostly. I do plan to sub the playing time with some more listening.
Ccs...it is great to hear from you. I just hope it does not take an event like this to keep you in the loop.
Truth is, any one of us could go down on the ice in winter and end up with similar results. |

Strings..Man dat looks like it hurt ! Didn't Les Paul once break his arm and continue to play with the cast ? I don't think he had that apparatus to deal with. Anyway hope you have a speedy recovery and continue to chime in on the board-I really dig many of your comments !
BTW...Watch the OXY it can sneak up on ya-you'll have to take my word on that one.... |

Dave, Mr. OXY can be creeper. But, I remember having it for wisdom teeth, I couldn't play guitar for &#@* ! I remember hammering rills were like half-speed at best. Guess guitar playing is not really a concern this time. Anyway, thanks for the nudge.
Not many things make my stomach weak either Six...unfortunately this one does.

Update...Good News!
I saw my specialist for the 1st time today (this whole thing happened in a remote place up north)...basically the surgeon set it up right so that's good.
And, unfortunately for my neighbors, I'll be playing slide by Labor Day and fretting by mid-Sept! Much sooner than I expected.
Your well wishes are working already. Thanks, cuz this typing with one hand blows - I'm not that great with two. |

Yeeeouch Pit! I hear elbows are a very painful experience...same arm?? I hope so in some saving grace kind of way. Bet that took a while to heal up.
It's all about time Pauly. I won't know until I get this thing off in 3 wks.
Freak, ever tried one of those "beveled aluminum" slides. They have a truly unique tone. But like you, I prefer see-thru. BTW-that pic above looks way better than it sounded but I did have fun with some keyed harmonics and false harmonics with claw-pickin' after attempting slide...actually sounded pretty cool. It's amazing how you can break those playing norms or plateaus when forced to ;O) even at the crudest level.
It was fun to put it on again after four straight weeks of light shoulders!

Strings, have you heard of Dave Hole? He plays slide the same way as you are doing in your picture. And get this, for precisely the same reason! He broke his arm and found it easier to play that way while it was healing, now it's a feature of his playing style. Dave lives in Western Australia and is blues player of considerable worth. |

2nd the endorsement of Dave Hole! He is one of a handful of VERY good slideplayers recording today. Even when he's playing straight, his music never stops moving, always a new chord, a little run here and there...and he never plays straight! If he's not at the level of, say Warren Haynes or Johnny Winter, its too close to tell. |

Mr. Hole probably made a lot more out of his dilemma than I. I couldn't even get the slide into a perpendicular position to the neck, except at the lowest frets, which is kind of important when sliding!
In less than 2weeks I'm outta jail and rid of this third bone... |

Don't expect too much, too soon, Strings. It's gonna be one stiff & sore SOB for a while, even after you're released from your bondage. You won't be back to full speed for 6 months or better. (Been there, done that!) |

Yep, I agree with Jchester. I doubt you will be able to HOLD a guitar with it for several days. And it will get really tired really quickly for a period of time that seems absolutely endless. Even the tricks you learned with the cast on won't work anymore because you don't have the support of the cast anymore. Been through it with both legs and both wrists, though never more than 1 at a time! You've got a good support group here. Don't hesitate to make use of it. We'll be here. |

Gary et al,
I got this robo thing removed last Thursday. A relief to have it gone. But you guys are dead on. I have no range of motion to boast and it is still quite swollen...I thought it would be much more mobile after 7 weeks...boy, was I wrong.
Anyway, in another week I start in on PT. I can only hope that brings some motion although I can tell it's going to be a while before it's right again.
Thanks so much for your thoughts, concerns and suggestions. It really makes a difference!

That is a TRULY ugly contraption, Strings! So glad its off. Yes, rehab will be slow (and painful). You may find certain illicit substances help, perhaps not reduce the pain, but separate YOU from the pain so you can rest,sleep, etc. Squeezing a rubber ball helps. Good Luck. |

And remember...Django did it with only a couple of mangled fingers...and Bassist Louis Johnson pioneered slap bass when his broken arm was still in a cast.

Starting to play again and running basic scales on mostly higher strings. I can't open chord or bar yet and reaching for the 6th string is nearly impossible. The sessions last about 10 min but it is damn fine to hear the wonderful tones of the 58's again(can't really get my hand around the 70's models - Smooth I yet)
The good thing is that I don't need the range of motion that I lack completely to get started - palm down and lifting the knuckles. My fingers remain fairly strong too.

Thanks Scorch...It's tough hearing it in my head, trying to play it and sounding like $hit when it hits the speakers!!
My finger tips have gotten so soft that the strings feel huge.
But enough bitchin', it's just going to take time. It does not take long to think how many others in this world have bigger health problems than I.

Sorry 'bout the delayed response...things have been a bit saturated on this end lately, so I have not been over in "Misc" for a while. The arm issues are kinda plateau-ing as I have not been diligent about stretch and strengthen. But, I did take Scorch's advice and play some every day even if painful (to my ears, ego or otherwise.) Playing is coming along and the fingers are fast enough...but a little sloppy and stiff on the reaches still.

Glad the "paw" is progressing... slow & frustrating as I know it is.
So sorry to hear of your wife's diagnosis, but good to hear her prognosis. I hope the treatments haven't been too terrible.

Update on Lesson #2:
First of all, thanks so much for all the emails from all of you wishing us well and keeping us in your prayers...it has worked well!!
As an update, Carolyn has finally completed radiation treatments as of last week and is quite grateful the hair is returning in its same color and texture as before the chemo - as an aside, she was beautiful bald...now she's got that GI Jane thing goin'.
We are done and hopefully forever!!
I'm positive the power of your thoughts and well-wishes weighed in heavily.

Wow, I totally missed the part about Carolyn. (The pictures of your arm were quite distracting).
I once bought this button in a Youth Hostel in Britain that said: "I would give my right arm to be ambidextrous".
It gets a totally new meaning, when I read the story of you both...
I mean: she IS your right hand, and without his woman, any guy's just half the man that he was with her. I see that, now my dad's been a widower for 4 years.
I'll pray you'll get old together and that you'll be still able to play her serenades, when your hair has turned white! That's how it's meant to be!
