PitV! Did you see these? Brand spankin' new...states that they are chrome but they sure don't look chrome in the enlarged pic unless that yellow color is being picked up from the table.

A bit $$$ too

Yes I did and they are outstanding..however I will never pay more for pickups than I did for the guitar itself. Rather I want plain jane looking, gold worn off mostly, Super 70's to match(as close as possible) my '73ish ILP.

I had a pair that were perfect and bid what I would pay for them...got beat by $1..and he knows who he is!!...lol

I have a pair, well, three actually (two bridge, one neck). They are the late model, uncovered version with black bobbins. I'll let 'em go cheap...

Damn Roadstar...I was so happy I didn't even look at the fact you said they were the uncovered late version. I'm trying to restore this LP to original spec's...that won't work will it?

Why not just put some replacement gold covers on them? I'm sure aging new covers wouldn't be very much work - though I wouldn't know where to start; steel wool perhaps?

Flatbag

It will be hard to find replacement covers because the size of the six holes for the screw-polepieces plus the spacing in between them differs from the Super 70's measurements.
(About the same problem occurs when you try to put a replacement bridge or tailpiece on an old Ibanez: won't fit, unless you use violence).

The trick is to find replacement covers with 50mm pole spacing. That's the center to center distance between the outside poles. I scored 3 pair off eBay while I was restoring my RS1400.

The 50mm spacing is correct for Super58, Super70, and V2 pickups. Probably other Japanese (metric) pickups as well.

It looks as if you guessed right, Bear.

I bought a NOS Aria Japan cream pickup (no cover) from an old Aria dealer. Exactly 50mm. That's 10mm center to center spacing between every pole piece to the next.

But normally the spacings of a neck (front) PU and a bridge (rear) PU are different, because the spacing of your nut is narrower than your bridge spacing. So intuitively I would guess there two types of covers needed. A Rear and a Front. So I measured the spacings on my 2355m.

Incredible, you're right: the front and rear PU have the same spacing! It looks like they use two Front pickups! But perhaps the 2355 with its narrow neck is not the best example.

PU specialist companies (whether it's Gibson or DiMarzio) nowadays wouldn't do this anymore! The strings should be above the centres of the pole pieces for the strongest and optimally balanced sound.

So I've at least learned that my Super 70s in the 2355m have the same 10mm spacing. I'm still shocked. I don't know if I can sleep tonight...

Where do you get your information? Seymour Duncan and Dimarzio offer two pole spacings: Standard and F-Spaced. There is no difference in spacing between neck and bridge in modern pickups.

Hi Bear!

Oh yes there is!
If you buy a matching set of pickups you often see an "F" stamped in the bottomplate which stands for "Front" (neck position) and the other pickup has a stamped "R" for "Rear" (bridge position).
The F spaced pickups are always slightly more narrow because of their position on the guitar, so that the strings go over the centre of the polepieces as much as possible.
So if you want to have a set of SD or DiMarzio pickups in your guitar you probably need one Standard (in bridge position) and on F-spaced (in neck position) if you want to have it optimal.

Where do I get my information? From the boxes of my new PUs for instance, from measurements taken of my old and new pickups before replacing them.
I measured for instance a matched pair of Gibson and 496R and 500T, but also WSC (WooSung Chorus) pickups who use T (Tail) and N (Neck).
FYI a quote from the Gibson website:

"In the 1980s, Gibson sought to offer players a reissue of the famed "PAF" humbucker and as it was eventually named (in 1990) the "57 Classic" is a faithful re-creation of the first Gibson humbuckers. In addition to maintaining a line of historically correct replicas, Gibson has introduced innovations such as separate bridge and neck pole piece spacing and commercially available high-output pickups."

http://www.gibson.com/whatsnew/pressrelease/2001/jan11a.html

Mentioning DiMarzio was perhaps not the best example, but I confused my WSC boxes (red on black paper inlay) with the DiMarzio Evolution box (same use of colour) the shop sold the used Japanese humbucker in, that I needed for my Kasuga Telecaster Custom '73.

FYI from the DiMarzio Website:
http://www.grandmas.com/DimarzioF-spacingFAQ.html

From which we must conclude that it is the other way 'round than Harry understandably suggested: use F (Fender)spacing in the Bridge position and Standard (Gibson classic 57) spacing in the neck position. (and it is possible to use the F-spacing PU in the neck position, but I'd prefer the standard).

Again very confusing: companies who use F for FRONT (neck) and others who use F for FENDER style spacing for the BRIDGE position.

Using N (Neck) and T (Tail) as a uniform standard would solve the problem of confusion.

So once again we learned...
that there's still a lot to learn...
which is quite a relief actually...

... and all without a single pill.

Paul,
FYI a quote from the DiMarzio site I referred to (the link shortens my text) and you obviously didn't read:

"A long time ago (in the 20th century, actually) the electric guitar world was divided between Gibson and Fender designs. One of the differences between the two was string spacing. In general, Gibson chose a narrower string spacing at the bridge than Fender, and therefore the polepieces on Gibson humbuckers were closer together than the magnets on Fender pickups. When guitar shops started installing humbuckers in the bridge position of Strats, it was obvious that the strings didn’t line up with the polepieces, and if the E strings were too far outside, the sound could suffer. Our first humbuckers followed the original Gibson spacing, and we call them standard-spaced. When we released our first humbuckers with wider spacing, Floyd Rose bridges were very popular. Floyd string-spacing is the same as Fender spacing, so we naturally called the new pickups F-spaced."

Floyd Rose used the Fender spacing,
Fender didn't adapt the Stratocaster with its Fender synchronized tremolo (1954) to the Floyd Rose tremolo system (1979).
That would be historical nonsense.

Calling the F-spacing Floyd Rose spacing would be too much honour. This spacing wasn't his idea.

If that were true, my 1988 MIJ (Fuji Gen Gakki) Stratocaster would have K-spacing.

Now it's my turn to beg for some Super 70s. I need two gold ones to restore my Korina finish Flying Vee (model 2387CT).

As good a condition as possible, covered only. Drop me an email with pictures, if possible, and what kind of money you'd like.

Thanks,
JohnS
