These make the Bob Weir Cowboy and 2670 reissues look cheap:

I will never understand the desire to have a copy of somebody else's guitar.

Or a beat to sh!t guitar.

Or a copy of somebody else's beat to sh!t guitar.

Or paying a butt-load of money for a copy of somebody else's beat to sh!t guitar.

Bear. Surely "Les Pauls" are an exception to the rule

Saying that. We now have signature Les Paul-Les Pauls. For example the 'Duane Allman' Les Paul. How long before we have signature, signature Les Pauls.

Six,

"Les Paul" is a model/type of guitar. It'd have to be a copy of somebody else's beat to sh!t Les Paul to qualify

Funny, Gibson doesn't seem to go in for the "distressed" or "tribute" stuff like Fender. The Rory Gallagher model is a good example. Oy!

http://www.elderly.com/fmic/items/FCRG.htm

But hey, to each his own. We must remember, "fan" is derived from "fanatic"...

John, I am surprised about waht you said in the first post up there. But then I realised what you were really saying was ...."affordable"... as opposed to "cheap construction", which isw how I first interpreted it.

Bobzilla:

Sorry for confusing you.:-) My choice of words was a reaction to the pricing of the guitars.

Back in 2006, when the 2670re was announced at Summer NAMM, George Gruhn (you've heard of him?) remarked to Paul Specht of Hoshino USA that he never thought he would see a $9,000.00 (list price) Ibanez.

I guess a $25,000.00 pile of parts seems even more astounding, to me. BTW, I saw one of these EVH monstrosities at the Fender booth in NAMM and had to catch myself from laughing out loud. I thought it was a joke...now that I see the price, I sure that it is. :-)

This is probably to help Eddie V's bank account or retirement fund or something since he cancelled his tour and fired the bass player to have son wolfie play instead???? Im all set im sure he could get axl rose to sing cheap these days!

This is the result of collector-itis. No player wants a hunk of crap like that. I remember when I could buy pre CBS Fenders for a few hundred bucks. I'd love an old Strat now, but the collector mentality has removed them from my possibilies. Not whining, just noting reality & wishing I was 21 again.

I don't know if you guys follow stuff like this, but if you want to choke your coffee, take a look at these (note the prices). This might throw some (lack of) perspective into the discussion of throwing money around:

Hey... that's only $3.5 million dollars. I'm going for that axe. I ask (respectfully) that nobody here tries to outbid me and let me have it for the $3.5 million. If you want to fight it out... fine... let's go!

I could have bought a 1931 Martin OM-18 about a year ago for $4000, if I'd had the money. Original owners son...8-8.5 condition, no serious issues & W/original case. I sent him to a friend, who bought it, and he has recently sold it for $8500. Guess I shoulda taken out a loan, but fact is IMO my '83 NW350 is a better sounding & playing instrument & it only cost me $300. I was afraid to even play the OM-18, for fear I'd scratch it or something. A glorified wallhanger IOW.

Ubetcha:

I've never had a chance to own an outrageously expensive Martin, but I do have a '72 Martin D35 and an '81 M340TV to compare. While they sound different, because of the different construction materials (rosewood vs. maple), I really love to play the M340 more. It's more comfortable on the hands and cosmetically nicer to look at. Add to that a price differential of probably more than a $1,000.00.

:-) I knew you guys would like those Martins. Is that insane or what?

Ubetcha, I'm pretty sure they *do* have good weed down in Santa Cruz! :-) And, dude, you really should've bought that OM-18!!!!!

Seriously, this kind of collecting isn't about the playing or the sound, it's strictly about collecting. I just thought you guys would enjoy that wretched excess!

No question, Fingers... It's just a whole different scale. We get excited when someone pays 6 grand for a twin neck vintage Ibanez... Someone shelling out $3M for a 70 year-old Martin is interested in it as an art collectable, certainly not for playing the thing.

Is that sane? It's an interesting question! :-) :-) Seriously, the collector mentality is a very fascinating subject.

Agreed Chazmo! I guess when one becomes a collector money is secondary. For someone like me (a non -collector) its hard to understand unless your up to you eyeballs in guitars, and sold the wife the dog the house for just one more guitar!!*Im not sure about the order, maybe poor fido goes first? Then again haha....

If I had won the Lottery (or something similar) 20 years ago then I would have definately spent a shed load of it on guitars and stuff. These days....I dunno. I'm thinking some extreme make over, a penis enlargement, a big motor launch and a 308 GTS

Do I need to see a shrink?

Not for the things you want.

But after you've won the lottery any shrink will be glad to empty your pockets.

Hahaha, Fingers, when I read the Last Day search, your first sentense was cut off just before the "-umption".
It worked like the frontpage of a gossip magazine:
I thought, you wrote something about a "lower back surgery!

About the Freudian thing: I think the size of the instruments says something about the need for compensation too. I've got several mandolins and ukeleles...
On the other hand, I have several basses too. It would be interesting to compare the private life situation at the moment of purchase and the size of the instrument.

Do we buy larger instruments, when we feel "small"?

Let's see...
When did I buy that 6-string neck-through bass?

If you thought that the 2670re was a lot of money for a doubleneck, check out Gibson's reissue offering for the Jimmy Page EDS 1275:

Wow wouldn't you think Jimmy should actually jam at your house at a backyard party with the guitar for that amount. Ibanez is still a great deal even for its limited runs!

I still like the 2640 better than this ugly SG.
