I was doing something nice and giving away a few unused appliances to a friend. He sent one of his delivery persons who was incompetant, and while going up steps, he yanked the hand truck out from under an oven which smashed my left thumb good.

Oh well, could be worse. I have my thumb and there are American Service People who come home missing limbs. I have much to be thankful for this New Year's eve! Happy New year to all!

Cmangeot,

I feel your pain! Have patience with it. Keep the circulation up (hot and cold treatments) and let pain be your guide.

In September I removed the fingernail from my left middle finger in rather violent and grotesque manner. Ripped it completely out of the nailbed is a more accurate desciption. It was two weeks before I could apply enough pressure to play again. We had to cancel a couple gigs at the last minute because of it.

However, it has healed and regrown nicely. Get well soon!

Hey Cap'n,

Thanks for the offer, needless to say the celebration of the new year found me imbibing and trust me, I was feeling no pain. But the thumb is healing well. I don't think I will see a new fingernail for a while, but they stitched the old nail into the nailbed to protect it. Still swollen and putting pressure still hurts a bit, but I was playing last night, so it cant be too bad.

Happy New Year to all, may we all find many new acquisitions in 2007, and thanks for the kind words!

Jack Daniels can solve 99% of the world's problems, including that thumb.

Thanks for the kind words from all, the thumb is healing nicely, however the old nail that they stiched on looks and feels disgusting. The stitches that are under the nail in the nail bed will absorb, but I have to have the stiches in the nail taken out tomorrow. I don't know if the old one will just fall off or what!

Hey Bear, is it OK for the old nail to come off?

The ER doc told me that if the rear of the nail bed heals, that the nail probably will not regrow. My fear is that if the old one falls off, the nail bed will heal over and never come back.

Any advise is greatly appreciated!

Unless you've done some serious damage to the nail bed itself, the nail will grow back. Mine was completely gone.

In my experience... don't believe a word a Dr. tells you. Or in other words, ALWAYS get a second opinion.

I'm really not kidding this time.

I'm a doc, and( if you believe me) there's not much you can do but keep it clean and dry, and wait.
And my second opinion is ...
'that must have really hurt!'
get well soon.

Cmangeot: Anybody call you Django yet?

Scott

P.S. Nothing hurt me ever more than when I lost a nail-- ripped right off in a bike accident!

Seriously, No Django comments, but I never realized how much pressure I apply to the back of the neck. So in that respect I have been attempting to play without touching the neck. I am just rushing it. With 20+ vintage Ibanez's around the house, it is hard not to rush it. This injury is forcing me to play slow, which I have not had to do since I started playing 25 yrs ago. Normally I am like Shawn Lane meets George Benson or Jimmy Bruno, for the past week I have been playing on the Clapton side. Just as well though, playing different things always gets me out of the practicing ruts that we all tend to get into.

(Not being a wimp) Yes Shel, this was one of the most painful things ever. I have broken bones that hurt much less than this. The stitches are out of the thumb and the doc told me to use my judgement to determine when to remove the old nail. Basically he said tape it if I want, or just leave it and let it fall off.
Hope no one has to deal with this in the future!

On a brighter note... I've never broken a bone, never had to have stitches, never been stung by a bee, I have no alergies, not even to Poison Ivy which I have slept in, along with a bunch of my buddies who all got way f**ked up from it. Why sleep in Poison Ivy? We didn't know it, it was dark, it was Boy Scouts out in the wilderness camping. They strung me up by my ankles up a tree because I was the only one who didn't get it. The ONLY one and yes, I was exactly where they all were. I have never had a headache so I don't really know what one feels like other than I guess it's pretty easy to understand that a headache must be a drag and it must hurt. I have lost a thumbnail though, my grandad slammed the car door shut on a 1964 Ford Falcon station wagon, back in 1965 and my thumb was in the door. The door slammed shut completely with my thumb in there, didn't lose the nail right then though, it got hit with a billiards cue afterwards whilst mucking about with the other kids and then fell off. I suspect that someday soon, I will walk out my front door, get stung by a bee, fall over, hit my head, get a headache and also break my arm in the fall and then land in Poison Oak or something (which I will wing up being alergic to.) Then I will need stitches to patch the bit where the arm bone breaks through my skin. Something to look forward to I guess.
