Just saw a few Ibanez related items in May's VG.

Here's an ad from a dealer in Pittsburgh, PA:
1977 Ibanez Custom Secret Agent, NM, S/B, Pro Scroll Repair, OHSC, $575

I always thought that "Custom Agent" didn't make much sense. This fellow's new moniker does have some flair. Next we'll see it called the "Model 007". J

Also, can a repaired guitar be considered Near Mint?

On page 107, the article with Tommy Shaw says of the guitars he used while with Styx: "I changed around; I used an Ibanez Artist I really liked, and I've still got it."

Anyone know anything specific about Tommy's Artist?

I don't know about Tommy's artist, but I remember seeing him play it when Styx were here in '78 (Grand Illusion) and thinking "Cool! He's got a guitar I can afford!" Of course, I wouldn't have know an AR3000 from an AR50 back then.

My favourite ad in VG of late has been one for a Bob Weir Standard 2680 that reads swapped pickups, bridge and tailpiece, otherwise very fine 8.0 condition. Very fine? is the body still ash?!?

I can hear this guy now: "I know it doesn't look much like a '57 Strat, but you can tell by them original tuning machines and the knob on the volume control that it's an original '57. Lot's o' them have swapped out necks and bodies now-a-days, 'cause the originals weren't so good." :-)

I never saw Styx live. But always liked their music. I inherited a couple of 8-tracks (stop laughing) in '80 or so and remember listening to them a lot.

I'd tend to group them with Kansas, as far as type casting them musically. That's good, I was into Kansas.

The ads are funny sometimes. "Very fine 8.0"? Sounds like he's grading sandpaper.

They other thing I remember about that concert was that during one song (Born for Adventure?) James Young and Tommy Shaw were standing about 30 feet apart and trading leads - AND GUITARS! They'd throw their guitars across the stage at each other simultaneously in these high arcs, catch them and continue playing. It was wild showmanship, but I'd hate to think of what happened during the practices when they first started trying it.

Hmmm, sounds like risky business. But a crowd pleaser, I bet!

In the August 99 issue of Vintage Guitar mag, in the Readers Gallery there are some Ibanez axes pictured. A '78 ST-300, '78 Artist and a '78 MC-300. He takes a nice picture.

The owner is a fellow New Jerseyite named John Francis who gigs with a band called Katalyst.

The May 2001 Vintage Guitar magazine has 3 different pictures in the Reader's Gallery that contain Ibanez guitars.

The first picture shows a young man with his collection of the six guitars. Four are Ibanezes: '83 Destroyer DT155, '85 Axstar, '91 SR800 bass and a '97 RG270.

The second shows what is called a "highly modified/artistic Ibanez electric hollowbody". This is a custom painted GB100 (or GB20). GB purists will cringe.

The third picture shows a '79 Iceman IC-400. The top has some kind of chrome like graphic pattern. I wouldn't think it's original.

It's a good read. One interesting thing is the new Challenger models added to the list.I find it amazing how all these years later there is still so much to find out.Like models that didn't make it to any catalog, just price lists to avoid legalities.I can't wait for the new book.

Chris:

Just got finished reading Michael's article. I'm glad we now have a more comprehensive and accurate article on the replicas.

We should all send our Ibanez collection pictures to VG for their Readers Gallery.

Well, all I can say is: "you saw it first on ICW." Just in case you missed seeing Greg from Arkansas' 6 piece collection of Professionals with vines in the Miscellaneous section under the heading: Survey - What's in Your Collection? you can see another shot of them (taken from a slightly different angle) in this month's Vintage Guitar magazine.

Get out your cameras people!
