If you, like me, have several hardshell cases and some of them are hardly used or opened you have probably noticed that when you do open them the smell is terrible! (a bit like the smell of old books but then more intense).

The problem is that it is very difficult to get rid of that smell. Leaving the case open for a few days does not do the trick.

Any suggestions?

John,

Yessir! I've got a couple (one in particular) that smell like a roadhouse. While I've never completely eliminated the odor, I did reduce it with Febreze. I let the case sit open over night. Then thoroughly vacuumed the interior, sprayed the Febreze and let it sit overnight again. I had to repeat this 3 or 4 times.

My dad has done some interior work on vintage autos. He found that sprinkling Baking Soda over the material will reduce the mildew odor. Again, sprinkle, let sit, vacuum, repeat. Perhaps a combination of the Febreze and Baking Soda, applied on alternating nights, might work even better.

Hope this helps!

Cheers
Steve

Here's an old thread...

I have a mildew problem in my UV1000 case... so bad, that when I pulled the guitar out last night it reeked of mildew!

I got a few silica bags in there to suck out all the moisture... and am going to sprinkle some baking soda in there.

Any other ideas? Is there a good antiseptic that won't damage the finish of the guitar, but get rid of the bugs making the smell?

Oh yeah ! you can use that spray that they use for the inside of cars,or those trees for that new car smell.

you could try an old method that once was used to keep bad odours from inside the refrigerator: small pieces of vegetal carbon. sincerely i don't know if it works, but you could try this "grandma" trick.
