Hey Ya'll,

This one has bugged me for a long time. I see folks making references to "Midnight Olive" as a finish color. Was "MO" really a factory offered finish?

Methinks not. The actual finish is "Metallic Black" (MB). As the clear coat yellows from age, it give the appearance of a greenish tint. I can find no reference, in any Ibanez literature, to a "Midnight Olive" finish.

If anybody has evidence to the contrary, please share!

Cheers
Steve

steve,
i have a pair of 1988 am400's, one is
MO and the other is a transparent black. both
do actually exist. i believe there was also
both variations on the CN250 in the late 70's.
the 78/79 catalog as well as the 1988 catalog
specify the MO midnight olive finish.

Steve & Orval:

My '77/'78 catalog insert shows all the Concert models (CN100, CN200 & CN 250) as available in Midnight Olive.

However, my 2/78 catalog shows only the CN250 & 200 in MO.

The same catalog lists the Performer PF400, PF300, PF230 & PF200 as coming in the MO finish.

Here's one I never noticed before: the 2/78 catalog also lists the Iceman IC400 as coming in Midnight Olive. It was the only Iceman model that was available in more than 1 finish, too. You learn something new everyday!

Hmm... Very interesting. My '88 catalog only shows White and Cherry Sunburst as available finishes for the AM400. 'Course, I've learned not to trust the catalogs completely. I don't have anything older than '83 in my literature.

So, what's the difference between MO and MB? Every guitar I've ever seen that was 'sposed to be MO, looked just like MB to me. The last one was an '83 RS405 that the guy swore up, down, and sideways was MO. Dunno where he got that idea. The '83 catalog clearly lists PW, MB, and FR as finishes for the RS405. Looked like MB to me!

Orval,

I didn't notice this the first time. You said your AM400's were MO and Transparent Black. Trans Black (TK) is different from MB. I was looking for only the MO, MB comparison.

A couple of Midnight Olive Performer's were delivered to the music shop I worked in back in the 70's. I can't remember the exact models but they were probably a PF300's or PF230's, which was the three pickup model if memory serves me right. I guess this was probably around 1977/78 so that ties in with Johns catalogue entry.

Haven''t seen any since.
