Hey Ya'll,

The subject of "Other Brands" and and "Archiving" of old threads has turned into an interesting discussion. Below are posts from the "Greco Artist" thread that started the conversation.

What do you think of these kissing cousins of the Ibanez? I'm seeing some great looking guitars with lawsuit headstocks, look-a-like logos and lots of set necks.

Should we allow them into the fold (make a section here for them) or keep ignoring them?

john,
i vote no on the topic of greco, there is a lot of
off topic stuff showing up here as it is. i have found
that there is way too much to read on a daily
basis if you open it up to other brands,
so i end up not following the daily digests at all.
now if there was absolutely nothing to talk
about on ibanez, not!!!!!
my2cents,
orval

I tend to agree with ya, Orval. However, it is a subject of interest. I would not object to an "Other Brands" section, but would prefer they remain in the "Miscellaneous" section for now.

Now if this was "Fuji Gen Gakki Collectors World"...

In terms of Darwinian site management, a topic will die naturally if there is no interest.

I don't think sifting through traffic is a problem, it's usually a non-issue based on the subject header; for example, I'm not into Roadstars so most of the time I don't read the Roadstar-related posts (of course, no offense to Steve intended, as I've found his info to be detailed and well thought out).

My vote would be that any action(s) that increase participation should be encouraged. This site is one of the few that hasn't degraded into idiocy at one point or another (like old day flame wars, spamming, etc.) so guard it well.

Regards,
Fred

PS - Speaking of off-topic, everyone liked the "So what music do you play?" post in "Miscellaneous" from a couple months back...just an example how different topics can help get conversations going.

Fred,

No offense taken! I'm not into Iceman, Reb Beach, and several other series. But I appreciate the interest other folks have.

I tend to read damned near everything on this site. It's nice not to have a pile of trash (flame wars etc..) to sift through.

Speaking of sifting, it would be nice if there was an Archive section. Perhaps everything older than six months or 1 year could moved there? Especially the Classifieds. Just food for thought.

Steve:

Hmmm. An archive section? I'll have to see how that might be possible. In my gut, I don't like to have conversation threads dismembered just for the sake of an arbitrary time limit. Seeing how a conversation developes and morphs and what else it produces is intriguing. But my POV is different.

Even though I resist, I know that reality says you gotta put your old stuff in the attic sometime. As long as I can find a way to make sure the Keyword Search facility will still be effective on the archived material, I'll be happy.

Fred:

I think you described the "Law of Atrophy" style of site management, rather than the "Survival of the Fittest" style that Darwin would espouse. After all, we've had no message threads attacking each other in a struggle for dominance.

John,

Think I stand corrected, atrophy it is! Must've been in the Serengeti too long (actually not)

...and an ongoing battle to identify fretboard stamps, serial number layouts, headstock shapes, and wiring schemes, faced with an array of lower order species claiming fake rarity, false originality, and understating guitar defects...

hmm, maybe I was thinking of ebay instead

Let's continue this discussion !!!

If an "Archive" was established, I would suggest on moving threads based on the last post. If nothing has been added in say 12 months, then that thread would be a candidate for archiving.

We've got some threads that have been on-going for a couple years! As long as they continue to receive contributions, I think they should remain in the foreground.

On the other hand, items in the classifieds probably don't need to stay up more than 6 months. Again, just my $.02

Cheers
Steve

Ok, Steve, here's my 2 cents. I think that classifieds need to be archived or given a notice to re-post if still valid. People rarely get rid of old ads they've placed even if the item is sold.

As for the discussions, I would agree that archiving would be fine as long as the discussions are still accessible. On my first few visits here, I spent a lot of time reading old discussions and found them interesting and valuable. In all honesty, I think this site's ability to display postings for the last day or last week is a great way to keep up on current discussions, with no immediate need to archive the older stuff. If the sheer number of conversations in each topic is getting a bit overwhelming, maybe resructuring the topics is necessary. You've already done that to some extent with your Roadstar conversations. Why not make Roadstar a topic of its own, for example?

Of course, if server space is an issue, you may have no choice but to archive.

Craig,

Thanx for the input.

John,

You got any more to say on this subject?

Anyone?

Bueller?

Cheers
Steve

I understand how others may not want anything but Ibanez guitars discussed here. But I would have no problem with expanding the discussions to include other makes and models. If it's in its own forum, and doesn't disrupt the other forums dedicated to Ibanez, then I see no problem with it. It could certainly be helpful to those that collect more than Ibanez only.
But I'm one of those people that has no problem with threads going off topic either.;)

On the whole I agree with Fredb. In addition:

As far as archiving goes, I guess it makes sense, as long as it’s easily retrievable.

On opening the site to other makes and manufacturers - have a look on the Tokai Forum:

http://www.tokaiforum.com/

The general section here covers other makes along with amps, FX, home recording amongst other topics. Seems to work ok. If you don’t want to read about it you don’t have to.

Apart from Ibanez and Tokai, I also have Greco and Burny guitars in my collection. I’d like to know more about them. And weren’t Electra made at the Ibanez factory too?

Key Word Search - It’s easy for the enthusiast to track down glorious information on a particular Artist model, especially if you know the model number. However, a novice may find it harder, as owning an Ibanez Artist can easily translate into maybe a dozen different model numbers. There are plenty of threads that start “I’ve just bought my first Ibanez guitar but I’m not sure what it is” etc, etc.

Can we make it easier for these guys?

I agree about the classified section. 6 months shelf life should be more than sufficient for any buyer/seller.
